A customer had some reservations about his bill at a restaurant.
One frustrated customer claimed that they were charged a “quiet time surcharge” on their bill, which was added before the tip — because the restaurant they dined at was empty.
The user shared on Reddit that they decided to check out a local restaurant for the first time, which seemed to be a quiet place to dine.
What seemed like a good thing quickly went south.
“At the end [of the meal], I check my bill and there’s an extra 20% pre-tip charge labelled ‘Quiet Time Surcharge,'” they explained.
The diner assumed it was an error and asked the server what it meant. The server apparently looked “sheepish” before explaining.
According to the Reddit post, the server said something along the lines of, “management says when it’s not busy, you’re basically getting the place to yourself. It’s kind of like flying private instead of commercial.”

I commend you for actually standing on principle no matter how small. If more did this all this crap would not be a problem because it would not exist. Far too many just throw in the towel and accept what society dictates. Just say no and don’t put up with it and just walk away. Live without it.
My mortgage company used to charge a $35 electronic fee if you paid that way. I wrote checks instead.
Yep, a lot of small businesses are charging a 2.5-3.5% charge if you use debit or credit. That is part of what the banks charge them.
I can’t get mad at them about it. The banks are ripping all of us off with more and more fees.
Retailers used to accept cards because it encouraged business and more potential spending. Restaurants are a bit different I suppose, you know you are going there in most cases and if you know the policy you bring cash or pay the fee. Personally it does bother me and I reduce my tip from a approx 22% ish down to 18% shifting the cost to the server which is unfair, but so is charging the extra 3-4%.
VISA and Mastercard used to ban these extra charges. But that must have changed as I have seen it in several small restaurants recently.
Its kind of weird in a way. I am also seeing more and more businesses NOT take cash and only take cards, so it is hard to know what to make of the current business models.
Theft and mistake protection. Entertainment places do this for concerts and such now routinely.
i still write checks to the county clerk because they charge a $1.00 fee for so-called e-check payment, which actually saves them money ... probably costs ‘em a fortune to process actual checks ... last time, they mailed my check back because i had used red ink, if you can believe that ... so i sent ‘em ANOTHER check ...
If true, it’s going to be REALLY quiet from now on!

I used to process cards for a business which did not add the transaction fee to customers who paid cash. Customers who paid with a card paid for the card fees. I like businesses which do that.
