Next month sees Windows 10 finally reaching the end of (mainstream) support. Microsoft has been pushing people towards Windows 11 for what feels like forever, and it worked – for a while.
The latest market figures show that this is changing. The statistics for August 2025 from statcounter Global Stats show a marked drop in Windows 11’s share of the desktop market.
Rewinding a little bit through time, June 2025 was a significant month because it marked the point at which Windows 11 finally caught up (well, very nearly) with Windows 10. Windows 11 managed to reach a market share of 47.98 percent of Windows desktops, compared to 48.76 percent for Windows 10.
July 2025 saw Windows 11’s steady increase in popularity continuing, with a big jump for the latest version of Windows up to a 53.51 percent share of the market. Windows 10 trailed behind at 42.88 percent.
But now the tide is turning. While Windows 11 remains more popular than Windows 10, there has been a very sudden drop in market share. As of August 2025, Windows 11 has a 49.08 percent share of the desktop Windows version market. This compares to 45.53 percent for Windows 10.
The downturn will be disappointing for Microsoft, and it is somewhat surprising for everyone else. It is all the more shocking when you consider we are now just weeks away from Windows 10 reaching the end of life.
It is difficult to pull apart the numbers to determine just why Windows 11 is suffering in this way, but there is a further surprise. Not only is Windows 10 increasing in popularity, but so is Windows 7. Yes, Windows 7.

I’ve had 95...98...XP...7...and 10. My favorite,by far,is 7. My laptop still has it but I’m finding that there are more and more things I can’t do with it...Chrome,for example.
Open Office, Libre Office, and others should handle those files.

I don't know, it is typical Microsoft BS. There currently is a work-around. It is called Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC. It will receive updates until 2032 if installed and licensed properly. But to preserve your current setup takes a little tinkering and a license key that costs about $20.
win98 was probably my favorite version.....stable as hell and never failed.
Windows is a lot like Dr Who. The new one is always the worst ever, the one being replaced is always the best ever.

as far as alternative.... ubuntu studio is very windows like, Thunderbird for email is compatible with almost everything, and for office stuff there is libre office which is less invasive that office, does not require a subscription or an account to use. The best part about all this is that its free to use.

That is certainly true in my case. I was one of the people who used one of the “Never10” utilities for a couple years. This was after the all knowing putzes at Microsoft would cause me to wake up to an upgraded Windows 10 computer.
One morning I woke up and found that my body had been replaced with a pod person which loved Windows 10... And that is pretty close to the truth.
In reality after buying new hardware which came with Windows 10... it started getting confusing to be using two different types of Windows. And after a while many of the software packaged I used including browsers would no longer work with Windows 7.
I have a Windows XP computer setup with a bunch of expensive video and audio hardware installed that I used as the heart of a home studio. It is sitting waiting for me to fire it up and use it again.
I have an XP box that I play a CD ROM version of monopoly with sometimes.
Currently around $20 if you migrate to Windows 10 IoT Enterprise 2021 LTSC and use a work around to preserve your entire Windows 10 setup.
I have done this to about 20 computers. I am just not bothering to repost the directions if no one has any interest.

We recently upgraded to Win11 at work. I had only minor issues which were resolved quickly. There is a built-in option to move the start button back to the left instead of center.
Quite a few youtube videos these days of people quitting Windows and trying Linux, including a very popular Swedish guy called pewdiepie. All are fed up with the privacy concerns and AI being shoved down their throats.
I would’ve got the 11 upgrade but it indicated my current capacity was insufficant.

I still love some of the old games that we used to play on XP...
This version of monopoly will play in most browsers... Be sure to turn on the sound by clicking on the speaker button inside the game for the total nostalgic feel.
