President Donald Trump on Friday rolled out a version of his administration’s long-promised gold card, a $1 million fast-track for wealthy foreigners to live and work in the United States.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, in a call later with reporters, said the gold card will replace the current EB-1 and EB-2 visa programs for people who are of “exceptional value” to the United States. He said the administration expects to initially make 80,000 gold cards available but will continue to evaluate the model and could eventually phase out other visas.

Is this a good idea Freepers? You want more "Desirables" and those who can contribute?

He has lowered this particular Visa from $5 million to $1 million.

It's much more achievable. Some of us now have something to work towards... 😂🥳

No, there are two visas: the Platinum Visa for $5 million and the Gold Visa for $1 million.

Gold Visa holders automatically qualify for legal immigration to the US and standard green card visa applies with full US taxes. For Platinum Visa holders, they can stay in the US for 270 days per year with full immigration status and no US taxes apply.

Please correct me if i’m wrong, but isn’t the Gold Card just an expedited way to Green Card status? No citzizenship, or even a pathway to citizenship, and no guarantees. You can get kicked out of the country and lose all the money because it’s just a fee payable to the state, no investment in some kind of business. And you would be liable to US taxes on foreign income too.

That looks like a very bad deal indeed if you have alternatives and don’t absolutely have to live in the US. And apart from the one-time fee i don’t see the advantages for the US either because there’s no incentive for investment in the US for Gold Card holders.

The Platinum Card on the other hand is so expensive that only about 100000 - 200000 people in the world would realistically even consider getting one. I guess that’s the reason why they try to draw them in with tax exemptions.I’m not sure if that will net a profit for the US in the long run. But one thing is for sure: those people are so rich they don’t need the US because they can live whereever the want.

I dunno. We were built by the tired, the poor. These rich folk are already citizens by virtue of their wealth-virtual citizens. Did Elon need it?
