The family of Iryna Zarutska has released a statement for the first time since their loved one was brutally killed on a North Carolina light rail train, demanding justice and sweeping public safety reforms.
In a statement shared through their attorney, the family described her as a "kind and hardworking young woman, deeply loved by her family and friends."
The family said they are devastated by her sudden loss and want the man accused of killing the 23-year-old to remain behind bars.
"We are heartbroken beyond words. Iryna came here to find peace and safety and instead her life was stolen from her in the most horrific way," the statement reads. "No family should have to go through this."
They said their immediate priority is ensuring accountability for Zarutska’s murder and stressed the case underscores a larger crisis in public safety.
"This could have been anyone riding the light rail that night… We are committed to making sure this never happens again."
Zarutska, a refugee from Ukraine, was heading home from her job at a pizzeria when Decarlos Brown Jr., a man with a history of mental illness and more than a dozen arrests, fatally stabbed her in a random attack, gruesome surveillance footage shows.

Use the leftist woke playbook against themselves. The claim of “we can’t incarcerate our way out of crime problems” (same in unison song from every woke city DA’s office), means we need the death penalty and prison labor forces to perform public works projects immediately. Warehousing them inside cages is not helpful.
Mucus, you and your ilk aren’t content to kill Ukrainians in Ukraine, you are even hunting them in the USA with your dreams of post-modern, woke, diversity and globalism.
Why do you hate Ukrainians so much?
I just looked it up. North Carolina allows a “not guilty by reason of insanity” verdict. So the poor, grieving parents have to be prepared for that.
☹️
And here’s where Trump comes in. It might be a stretch to call this a federal hate crime. Don’t care. Go for it, Mr. President.
No problem, execute the Feral Negro and ship his body to 'em in Ukraine C/O Zelensky, as proof.
If people will testify that he actually said “I got that white girl” as has been reported... he’s gonna have trouble with that insanity plea.
This is one case that I’m ok with the state taking a life. We have clear an irrefutable evidence (not just witnesses, but actual video).
But we need death to be delivered quickly not take decades. Although it is kind of nice knowing they are sitting on death row knowing they will be killed by the state one day.
It's not crystal clear, but the statement can be heard on the video soundtrack.
If I was ruling dictator of a United States, I better quit the post right here. My method of justice is very harsh.
Go after the inept judge who turned him loose. Come down hard on the fool and lock her ass up for years. She is a danger to Society.
I’ll finish it for you. After he’s found guilty, he’s taken to the nearest tree and hanged. And his body is left hanging as a warning to others.
RE: hanged as a warning to others....
The Bob Dylan song Desolation Row begins “They’re sellilng postcards of the hangings....”
This refers to this native state of Minnesota’s selling of postcards of the June 15, 1920 Duluth hanging of three black men.
One man is facing the camera and pointing to the three.
The post cards were commonly sold in stores as souvenirs of Duluth. The Minnesota Historical Society has them on display today.
Note: The three black men lynched turned out to have been innocent.
If prisons are bad enough, and law enforcement is effective enough, you can. See El Salvador. But in cases like this, I'm all for the death penalty. Insane AND guilty should be a valid verdict. One could argue that in such cases as this, insane and evil are the same thing.
Going after that last judge would be justice. Anything legally done to the evil murderer will not be “justice.” It just won’t be enough.
Yep. Want to fix things? Put capital punishment on the table for every crime in which the victim would have been justified resisting with lethal force: aggravated assault, rape, armed robbery, carjacking, etc. That doesn't necessarily means it should be applied in all circumstances, but give prosecutors the option of pursuing it, especially when the perpetrators demonstrate a track record of failure to reform.
After all, if a criminal perpetrates such a crime, they themselves have placed the value of the fruits of the crime above that of their own life. They only survived their crime by virtue of the fact that their victim did not, or could not resist with the force the law would have allowed. If a criminal puts a higher value on their crime than they do on their own lives, why would society have any desire to keep such a person above ground?
