For decades, US firms have enjoyed a strong foothold in Germany, particularly in the country’s western regions, which were under the control of the Western Allies after World War II. In the immediate postwar years, US cigarettes were so highly prized on the German black market that they effectively served as currency. […]
Today, however, the climate has shifted. The image of the US in Germany has taken a major beating, raising questions about how US companies can maintain their reputation. Some US firms are now actively marketing their products as “Made in Germany.” […]
Coca-Cola, perhaps more than any other US brand, appears concerned about being tied to the US government’s politics. The Atlanta-based company recently launched a “Made in Germany” campaign in Germany, which highlights the names of employees such as Daniel, Heike, Jana, Jessy, and Muhammed. Each is featured under the slogan: “Made by [employee name]. Made in Germany.”
“The campaign aims to show Coca-Cola’s deep roots in Germany,” the company told DW in a statement, noting that the company had been part of German business and society for almost 100 years.
According to the company, many Germans are unaware that most Coca-Cola sold in the country is already bottled locally.
Given the current political climate, the move is widely seen as an attempt to distance the brand from US politics. …

They actually make it with sugar in Mexico.
I was tempted to buy a bottle to see if it tasted like USA Coke in the 1950s, but decided to just walk by.
I always felt that things were never really the same after the demise of Otto der Große - though I suppose that an argument could be made that the Reich continued up until the execution of Konradin (the son of Konrad IV) in Naples in the year 1268, though we did at least gain an independent Italy, with Savoy, Milan, Venice, Genoa, Florence, the Papal State, Naples, and Sicily finally coming into their own.
Are you a student of history?
Regards,
I can’t say for sure that it’s identical to what you rememeber from the ‘50s, but Mexi-Coke in a glass bottle does taste better than the U.S. high-fructose version in either an aluminum can or plastic bottle.
If you don’t want the Mex version, hang tight... help may be on the way. Based on Pres. Trump’s lobbying, Coca-Colas said that it intends to introduce an American-made, cane-sugar version of its flagship soda this fall. So stay tuned...
I graciously glossed over that glaring error, since it is sometimes understandably difficult to separate Germany's internal squabbles from the larger conflict of the Thirty Years' War.
You have a personal connection to that period?
Regards,
Germany actually never existed until over 200 years after that.
This might be a big deal or maybe not. My guess is Coke, which is an aggressive company isn’t taking any chances, hence the information campaign.
Coca-Cola consumption by country in liters for the top 7.
United States 39.3B
Mexico 18.5B
China 10.8B
Brazil 8.7B
Japan 7.5B
Germany 6.8B
Russia 6.4B
If sales decline in Germany moving forward, I’ll be looking at the other 6 markets for a comparison.
I’ll also be looking at a lot of smaller countries that don’t have the volume, but Coke has an outsized percentage compared to their competitors.
Until we can compare monthly & yearly sales data in Germany, there’s not much to go on.
I’m a student history l. Germany didn’t exist until the 1860s.
Bud lite moment?
I'm currently reading "Colditz: The Definitive History" by Henry Chancellor. It's about the German POW prison that held mostly British officers, but French, Dutch, Polish, Russian, and Belgian too. They got monthly Red Cross parcels at Colditz, which included cigarettes and chocolate. The prisoners would sell the cigarettes, chocolate and other items to the guards for cash, or for special item requests. It's a great book which includes interviews from many of the officers who were held there, and their captors, along with the stories of the escape attempts. The majority of the escape attempts were made by British, French and Polish officers. There were 316 officers involved in 174 escape attempts, with 32 successful escapes.
(Just look at the joy on their faces!)
Don't niggle! We were speaking in broad terms.
Regards,
Back in the early 80's, we were given a ration card. Cartons of Marlboro were five bucks.
“In my metro Seattle Safeway grocery store, Coca-Cola has a stand alone display of Made in Mexico glass bottled Coke.
They actually make it with sugar in Mexico”
Coke is going to make a sugar cane based / USA manufacturered version this fall. I guess Trump requested it. I believe it will be a limited run at least initially. It doesn’t replace the current coke version, just another option.
Be appreciative. Germany took it on the chin, and probably poisoned a lot of people, figuring out how to make Fanta grape from prison hooch for the world to enjoy.
Ok, I’m going to say it, I miss the white male manliness of the wermark during WW2, ever since then, the white maleshave been turned into wimps by those who want to control them
