One international student after another told the University of Central Missouri this summer that they couldn’t get a visa, and many struggled to even land an interview for one.
Even though demand was just as high as ever, half as many new international graduate students showed up for fall classes compared to last year.
The decline represents a hit to the bottom line for Central Missouri, a small public university that operates close to its margins with an endowment of only $65 million. International students typically account for nearly a quarter of its tuition revenue.
“We aren’t able to subsidize domestic students as much when we have fewer international students who are bringing revenue to us,” said Roger Best, the university’s president.
Signs of a decline in international students have unsettled colleges around the U.S. Colleges with large numbers of foreign students and small endowments have little financial cushion to protect them from steep losses in tuition money.
International students represent at least 20% of enrollment at more than 100 colleges with endowments of less than $250,000 per student, according to an Associated Press analysis. Many are small Christian colleges, but the group also includes large universities such as Northeastern and Carnegie Mellon.
The extent of the change in enrollment will not be clear until the fall, Some groups have forecast a decline of as much as 40%, with a huge impact on college budgets and the wider U.S. economy.
International students face new scrutiny on several fronts
As part of a broader effort to reshape higher education, President Donald Trump has pressed colleges to limit their numbers of international students and heightened scrutiny of student visas. His administration has moved to deport foreign students involved in pro-Palestinian activism, and new student visa appointments were put on hold for weeks...

Someone suggested yesterday that Chinese nationals not be allowed to attend grad school.
In my opinion, a Chinese national should not be allowed to be in any secured area connected to an entity which has received over $1 million in federal funding in any recent 12-month period wherein electrical engineering or biochemistry research which could be expected to be of value to the US military or a drug company is being conducted. Federal research grants should have supporting language in them.
The University of Rochester is a private school. I’m assuming the school’s endowment is paying for that foreign scholarship, not NYS.

“ Good. I voted for this. Defund the universities. Make them make hard decisions about what they do.”

This!
A large part of the reason why universe are able to hire leftist propaganda, experts, and brainwash. A large part of our youth is because of all the funds coming in from overseas. I wouldn’t mind if perhaps 3% to 5% of the student body of a university came from allied nations, But the idea of having more than that coming from any nation who could afford to pay the tuition is absurd, and not only doesn’t serve the interest of this country, it hurts us a lot. On top of everything else, these people take spots that could go to Americans, and they raise the price of tuition for everybody who goes to that institution.
Good!

YAY!!!
Coming soon to this former college campus:
Bright Child Charter School
Shining Light Dorm Housing Facility
Research and office space is still available for lease or sale!
I suggest cutting the worthless DEI departments.
Expanded Mission College & High School
Nah. Me neither.
Students from Red China
Communist University
It all seems a perfect match to me.
There are probably a lot of courses that aren’t all that popular that colleges could cut .
And this is relevant how? A “loan” to an American citizen is not the same thing as GIVING countless $millions to non-citizens on the taxpayer’s back only to end up on the national debt of $37,000,000,000,000, and growing.
Get the US government out of education period!
And get rid of all the black, gay, ethnic, underwater basket weaving studies and actually teach useful courses.
There’s probably a senior assisted living opportunity for some of these as well.
I think it’s better for them to go bankrupt first. They can restart teaching what people want or need to know only.
Finally, the myth which developed in the 2000’s about college education(except the hard sciences) being so valuable is dying
Perhaps they should reduce the bureaucrat/educator ratio to a number less than 1. That might make them into something resembling real schools.
