It’s a conspiracy. The rest of them jumped ship and swam for it, abandoning their wives and families to live it up in Vegas! They deliberately left the clamps off the hatches.
And being loaded over capacity. It does take much to sink an overloaded ship if it starts taking on water.
The song has several inaccuracies.
But he brought a great deal of honor to the ships and the men who sail them to keep the machinery of the country running and preserve civilization. So much that the day after he died The Mariners Church in Detroit honored him by ringing it's bell 30 times. 29 for the men lost on the Edmund Fitzgerald and one for Gordon.
Sad tragic story
The hold clamps were worn and damaged through years of hard use, and they gave way during a big storm, along with that vent pipe thingy. The Edmund Fitzgerald needed more regular maintenance checks and repairs. It was an accident waiting to happen.
