Why 20+ countries just froze shipping to the U.S. (and what it means for you)

Several postal services around the world have paused package deliveries to the United States this week, and it's not because they're overwhelmed with shipping demand. The suspensions, which affect shipments of goods valued under $800, follow a recent executive order that President Trump signed that effectively ends the de minimis exemption on August 29.

The fallout has been swift and global. We're talking about major disruptions from Europe to Asia that might impact many American small businesses, limit where you can shop, and make it more complicated and expensive to receive the items you order.

What countries have limited deliveries, and why

Postal services in countries like Germany, Japan, France and Australia have announced service suspensions until further notice. Most suspensions cited logistical challenges and uncertainty over the U.S.'s tariff policies after the elimination of the de minimis exemption.

The de minimis exemption is basically a free pass for small packages. Since 1938, any package you receive from overseas that’s valued under a certain limit gets to skip customs fees and import taxes when it arrives in the U.S. That limit has been $800 since 2016.

But postal services worldwide say they're scrambling to figure out how this will actually work. Key questions remain unresolved, particularly regarding how and by whom customs duties will be collected in the future, what additional data will be required, and how the data transmission to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection will be carried out.

I have two expensive Deutsche Grammophon records stuck in Germany, which is actually their fault because I ordered them well before the de minimis exemption was stopped.

It’s not just China, look at this one.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/157150613432

The sale price is $1.08 US, and shipping from The People’s Republic of Canada to my US address is $2.90 US.

This makes no sense.

it’s not just subsidization of the shipping costs, but the duty-free costs of billions of dollars of unknown package contents, including vast quantities of illegal contents pouring into our Republic ... and no doubt our trading “partners” handle inbound packages duty-free with subsidized shipping costs too, right? ... or our we the only suckers that do this on the planet?

Camping out on latest, waiting for anti tariff threads. You are always the 2nd or 3rd post. Pathetic.

nwrep and the other TDS trolls are also careful to toss in some pro-USA comments here or there so they can always pretend they “see both sides” of the issues.

If you personally order medications from Israel which like India is one of the world’s largest medication manufacturers after China FedEx and UPS as ‘re now going to charge YOU personally the XX percent tariff AND import duties and all the fees to process that. Before if those medications were under $800 they were exempt for the individual. So have fun paying out the nose personally for this now everyone.

Truth is medication manufacturing for generics is NEVER coming back here the American materials and labor market is not competitive due to labor costs. Slapping tariffs is only casing costs of drugs that will never be made here again. Some drugs have tripled in price since this nonsense tariff war has been startre. You have to know what battles to pick.

Any manufacturing that comes back is going to be automated with AI again due to labor costs. People expecting $70,000 a head manufacturing jobs against 1/3 that in India or automated in Israel is too stupid to do the math in a fungible commodity. Its basic econ 1301 capital via automation replaces labor when the automation is cheaper in the long run than labor. We crossed that line years ago and AI bipedal robots put the nail in the coffin.

This is hurting individually owned small business sellers and buyers. Especially individuals who sell on Ebay or other such platforms.

Not one word in the posted AOL link that explains WHY Trump is doing this.

Because...?

Major export countries and their producers are shipping their goods to smaller countries that re-package those goods in smaller units that qualify for the USA sub-$800 exemption.

Pure tariff fraud!

Naturally, Trump and his political staff have completely failed to explain what is going on to Trump's loyal supporters.

Commercial express services. Companies like DHL Express, FedEx and UPS are still shipping to the U.S., but they’ll calculate and collect the new tariffs for you.

That's because they've been doing it for 50 years in the reverse direction. Tariff paperwork is nothing new to them. What's new is America starting to act like every other country.

If a country wants to enjoy free trade with the new America, they just need to sign an actual free trade deal with Trump that results in approximately equal value trade in both directions. The lopsided trade agreements that kill American jobs are over, at least until the Demonrat Destroyers get back inside the castle.
