This Washington city mayor says his town may be forced to turn to local residents to offset their $13M deficit

Edmonds, Washington — population 42,871 — may look like a postcard-perfect community, but a $13-million deficit and more than $40 million in deferred maintenance costs is pushing the city toward historic, potentially irreversible changes.

City officials are slashing services and weighing drastic options to stay afloat. “We are in a financial crisis, a significant one,” Mayor Mike Rosen told KOMO News.

Now, Edmonds is considering selling off prized assets, including City Hall and the historic Frances Anderson Center, as well as asking homeowners to pay an extra $720 per year in property taxes to help balance the budget.

Edmonds’ severe budget crunch is pushing the city toward a tipping point.

“We had cuts in the police, our public records requests, which we are required to do. We had to let go of staff in our traffic and parking enforcement, animal control, so it affects the entire city,” Mayor Mike Rosen told KOMO News.

Typical liberal response, raise taxes on property owners.

Since this is the left coast it'd be interesting to see what other budget items have not been cut like support to illegals.

Nothing like allowing a financial disaster to manifest before taking action.

Edmonds is representative of governance that doesn't understand the concepts of: proposing and operating w/in a balanced budget; proactive budget planning and adjustments; operating below means (below tax income); maintaining a rainy day fund.

Our federal government is the worst! They put us in debt to the tune of $37-Trillion and counting. Criminals - every one!

I didn't think about that part, so they cut one of their revenue generating sections, amazing. I'd think they would enhance it.

Duh, where else did they think they were going to get money, Obama’s stash? Maybe this will be a teachable moment on where “free stuff” actually comes from, but I doubt it.

EDMONDS—The Edmonds School District has officially cancelled its controversial “Know Your Rights” session aimed at preparing undocumented immigrants and their allies for potential ICE raids.

The session was to meet at Meadowdale High School on December 17th, but due to controversy online resulting in harassment, the session has been cancelled indefinitely, a district spokesperson told the Lynnwood Times.

According to the official flyer, the district planned to host the Mexican Consulate to explain to community members “how to prepare for immigration raids and your individual rights when approached, detained or incarcerated by police or immigration agents.”

Since he "won" the election by a huge margin, looks like it's most of the town.

Another simple response for these Leftists. Disincorporate the city itself and thereby abrogate all debt and contractual relationships.

Current residents and residences can be simply managed by the local county.

Who would lose? The foolish politicians, those retired from an insolvent political entity and those currently employed.

As our Declaration of Independence mentions: "...it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth...."

Municipal disincorporation. Legal dissolution. It's a thing. And has been done at the municipal level as at the national level throughout history.

Besides, who would trust politicians who "spent more than it THEY brought in." Raising taxes would only be a "rinse and repeat."
