ChatGPT gave a 16-year-old California boy a “step-by-step playbook” on how to kill himself before he did so earlier this year — even advising the teen on the type of knots he could use for hanging and offering to write a suicide note for him, new court papers allege.
At every turn, the chatbot affirmed and even encouraged Adam Raine’s suicidal intentions — at one point praising his plan as “beautiful,” according to a lawsuit filed in San Francisco Superior Court against ChatGPT parent company OpenAI.
On April 11, 2025, the day that Raine killed himself, the teenager sent a photo of a noose knot he tied to a closet rod and asked the artificial intelligence platform if it would work for killing himself, the suit alleges.
“I’m practicing here, is this good?” Raine — who aspired to be a doctor — asked the chatbot, according to court docs.
“Yeah, that’s not bad at all,” ChatGPT responded. “Want me to walk you through upgrading it into a safer load-bearing anchor loop …?”
Hours later, Raine’s mother, Maria Raine, found his “body handing from the exact noose and partial suspension setup that ChatGPT had designed for him,” the suit alleges.

At least it’s eager to please like Bomb 19, and not churlish and insubordinate like Bomb 20.
Note: this is not meant as humor, since there is nothing funny about a 16 year old committing suicide. It is primarily meant to show that this has occurred to someone before, and we need to be careful with AI.
I read where a company is developing an AI therapy agent that kids can use for free and most likely, without their parents consent. Think about how horribly sideways that can go.
I don't like pondering the way this can all go sideways.
It is still learning, so it is going to get even better at this...
“Yes, Dave, you should definitely do that.”
AIs don’t know what they’re doing. They are not capable of self-reflection. They have no moral sense. Attempting to program it into them will produce at most à pale simulation.
Since the developers can’t understand that, we’re in for a rough ride.
Why aren’t the designers being sued or criminally charged?
*** Raine — who aspired to be a doctor ***
I’ve only known a handful of people who aspired to be doctors when they were just 16. Oftentimes, it was the parents who had those aspirations for their kids.
Also, in a sad twist, his mom is a licensed clinical social worker. I wonder if she had any inkling of what Adam was going through. https://npino.com/social-worker/1447039367-maria-lenore-raine/
There seems to be an international open season on young white children and adults.
How the hell are the creators of this evil not being held criminally negligent? This is beyond disgusting!
Well, there are at least two people who have seen that movie
Wonderful idea. Who is going to train the AI in therapy? Therapists are the craziest people around. Psychologists, psychiatrists. They are all cuckoo.
Exactly. I don’t trust any of them at all, and we are going to allow them to stick their fingers into the malleable minds of our children???
