Girl, 11, gives birth at home as parents who 'didn't know she was pregnant' are arrested for neglect

A couple in Oklahoma has been arrested after an 11-year-old girl in their care gave birth at home without any medical assistance - though they insist they did not know the girl was pregnant.

The young girl's mother, Cherie Walker, 33, and her stepfather, Dustin Walker, 34, are facing felony child neglect charges after they allegedly failed to provide supervision or medical care to the child, who gave birth at their house in Muskogee on August 16, Fox 23 reports.

She was 36 weeks pregnant and gave birth to a full-term baby, according to court documents obtained by the local news station.

Investigators also claimed in the charging documents that the 11 year old received no prenatal care and had not been to the doctor in over a year. She was also reportedly homeschooled.

Prosecutors then only found out about the incident after the girl was taken to a local hospital following the birth of her child.

'I was horror-stricken to find out it's an 11-year-old girl who's given birth, and that she had no medical care and she had no one to be with her,' Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson told KJRH.

She added in remarks to News on 6 that the young girl is 'traumatized.'

'She's been through a horrific ordeal. I mean, not only has somebody gotten her pregnant, but she gave birth at home without medical assistance and this will be with her... for the rest of her life.'

Hutson says she is now planning on filing additional charges against Cherie and Dustin, who are being held on a $100,000 bond ahead of their scheduled September 3 court appearance.

Prosecutors are also awaiting paternity tests to determine who may have impregnated the young girl. Those may take two weeks to complete.

You hear all the time of adult women giving birth and didn't know they were pregnant. Happens every year.

An 11 year old child? She must have been very obese for them not to know. Even then don't parents take kids to the doctor once a year like when we were kids?

BTW in this story we can all but figure who the father is.

Dust-Walker the step dad, would be my first guess.
That poor child. Certainly her behavior must have changed while she carried the baby. I would think an 11 yr old girl would be full of anxiety. Her mom didn’t notice anything?
I don’t believe that.

Unfortunately there's a pretty good chance. The paternity test will show...

“Dust-Walker the step dad, would be my first guess.”

It would be guess 1 through 10 with me.

There were 5 other kids in the home so I wonder how much the mom knew?

Plus the child was 11 how much did she understand? I’m shocked she already had periods, then again they do get them young these days. We did not get them till Junior High.

Hah! Not in my case, and I'm from SoCal.

There’s more to the story for sure. I would hope investigators are leaning on those two pretty hard.

According to grandma, the 11-year old girl had a 12-year old boyfriend. Having said this, a paternity test is indicated.

A while back, I knew a family at church that lived in ramshackle conditions. The father worked as a janitor at the local hospital and the mother was a full-time, stay-at-home mom. The whole family slept on a couple mattresses on the floor in the “living room.” They were poor but there was a lot of love there. I don’t think anybody begrudges such families receiving food stamps or qualifying for Medicaid.

On the other hand, what about families where nobody works, and where moneys intended for the benefit of the children are diverted to drugs and alcohol? I should hope social services would intervene before an incident such as an 11-year old giving birth, but if not before, than soon after.

It’s Oklahoma, which makes all this believable.

And the condition of the baby?
Nothing about the baby’s health condition in the article.
Liberals don’t really care.

I recall two doctor visits as a kid, one for a very badly lacerated left index finger and one for a metal particle embedded in my cornea. Both were in high school.

My bet is on the 12 year old being the father. If he was staying there a lot being babysat, as the grandmother says, then preteens nowadays experiment. Of course, the next question is why was a 12 year old needing babysitting?

No doctor in a year! Homeschool so no outside activities except sneaking around the neighborhood on the prowl. Sad situation.

Had they given her an abortion pill at 36 weeks, none of this would be making the news…..and the same people (us) would still be outraged.

Ah. That would explain a lot.

How about North Dakota? I had a coworker that just could not get enough sex, she was in her early 30’s. She was proud of it and boasted she was on birth control pills since age 13.

I’m certain in order to get the pills the parents had to know it and approve.

While I hesitate to assume too much too soon by assigning blame for this kid’s pregnancy, and going it one more by suggesting that everyone else should go along with it, I’ll say this: Either somebody and/or someTHING is going to have to step up and take or be MADE to take responsibility for it. The last thing that I want to hear about it is that there’s a stealth GoFundMe or other crowdfunding effort(s) set up to raise big money to not just get somebody’s ass out of sling, but to also pay for what most people go to work and earn a living for. It would be like “giving back to the community” run amok. Fools Helping Fools...Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Most teen girls are on birth control which is started soon after menses.

It is used to regulate lighten or remove menses to a 2 or three time a year occurrence. And of course prevent pregnancy. High-schools and planned parenthood and family doctors are the sources.

One cannot be in the room with a teen when visiting a doctor these days.
