Record heat waves, blazing wildfires and oppressive humidity are transforming the world’s tourism industry as holidaymakers struggle to deal with the havoc wrought by climate change.
That’s seen a growing number look beyond traditional hotspots like Greece and Portugal in favour of ‘coolcations’ – visiting parts of the world that offer milder climes. Already, nearly half of Virtuoso’s luxury travel advisers say their clients are altering plans due to climate change.
Heat waves in Europe saw tourist sites including the Acropolis in Athens and the Eiffel Tower in Paris shut this summer, and the region is tipped to see a widening tourism divide due to the uneven impact of climate change.
Its northern coastal regions are likely to have a more than 5 per cent increase in demand during summer and early autumn, while parts of its south will lose almost 10 per cent of summer tourists, according to a European Commission study.
That trend is likely to be replicated around the world.
Dangerously high temperatures have driven down visitor numbers at Tokyo Disney Resort, and US theme park operator Six Flag Entertainment said severe weather, including heat waves, drove a nearly US$100 million (S$128.6 million) loss in the second quarter as it reduced revenue outlook. Meanwhile, places like Antarctica, Norway and Iceland have seen their popularity boom.
From ice parks to green oases in city centres, here’s how the world is trying to help tourists beat the heat.
Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is mixing ancient practices and cutting-edge technology to combat extreme heat that saw daytime temperatures soar to 51.8 deg C earlier this month – a near record.

Translation: Modern people are wusses who don’t like outdoors summer heat, so they blame global warming as an excuse to head to Alaska instead of Athens.
I want to see this article again in January.
It’s so hot forests spontaneously combust!
What a bunch of pansyasses.
Unless those temperatures are in Celsius. Then, yeah, that would be uncomfortably warm.
Exactly. It’s always been hot in Italy and Greece in the Summer. Best is October and May, but the kids are in school.
And Greece and Italy are always packed in the Summer anyway.
This is also part of the “over tourism” scam which constantly tells people not to go to popular places.
My thoughts, exactly!
A ‘vacay’ to Churchill, MB in January will ‘cool’ them of their desires for a ‘coolcation’, for a long time to come! If the Polar Bears, lunching at the garbage dump don’t cure ‘em, the cold, freezing their ‘willies’, will!
LOL
Because Athens has never been 106 before/s
It’s always been 101 or 108 lol
What a bunch of Left Looney BS.
“And Greece and Italy are always packed in the Summer anyway.”
My sister’s in Italy as we speak and she’s not complaining about the heat and humidity - but she lives in SW Louisiana, so that may affect her frame of reference lol.
If this heat wave was a new phenomena it would be cause for some concern and study. It has happened many times in the past and will happen in the future. We call it weather.
International Falls here I come with my torture tested thermometer.
It’s havoc, I tell you! It’s August, I’m in MN. where it’s usually in the 90’s, and I was glad to have a sweatshirt on this morning.
It’s been a beautiful, cool summer, great for all recreation.
I’m sure Florida will kill me, when I go home in Oct./s
All you dang hippies and dippies stay out of Alaska! We don’t want or need you here!
Lies
I have a question. If the “climate change crisis” is so bad in Europe, why do they have to accept “climate refugees?”
We should worry about ICE AGES, as that’s when people will starve. The warmer, the better growing season, and longer growing seasons, too.
