I just watched a rerun of the final M*A*S*H episode. I remember that the country stopped when this thing originally ran.
The final episode of MASH*, titled "Goodbye, Farewell and Amen," aired on February 28, 1983 on CBS. It was a 2½-hour television event that marked the end of the series’ 11-season run and became the most-watched single episode of any television series in U.S. history, drawing over 106 million viewers.
It was a chicken! That’s the last time I watched that “sitcom”. And now for a very special episode of... F off and entertain me you monkeys!
In before the “MASH was an anti-war anti-American propaganda TV show” comment.
Hoo boy! Was I ever late on this comment.
As a former military medical officer, I have to agree with you. The program was really less about Korea than it was about Viet Nam.
At least you didn’t totally let me down.
Missed it, deployed on to the Mediterranean onboard USS Nimitz .
Couldn’t stand Alan Alda
MASH is to military hospitals as Hogan's Heroes is to German POW camps.
However, could any network produce an episode like Inga in today's environment? I wonder if it is still on MASH's syndication cycle or if the episode is just skipped.
Klinger: I hope my attire doesn't shock you, DoctorMaybe they'll just toss the last line down the memory hole.Inga (visiting doctor) No, not at all.
Klinger: The outward trappings of my unfortunate insanity.
To tell you the truth, I don't belong here. If two doctors will sign a form, I'll be able to go home. And so far, I've got all but both of them.
Inga: You know, I may be able to help you.
Klinger: Oh, you can? You mean it?
Inga: Yeah, well, I have a colleague in Copenhagen who does sex-change operations.
Klinger: - Yeah? What's that?
Ingav Well, you would finally be transformed into a woman. It's very sophisticated surgery, but, uh, it's possible.
Klinger: You mean, somebody You mean, take a knife and and...
Inga: Yeah.
Klinger: They're crazier than I am!
“”””It was wall to wall liberal propaganda, very cleverly executed. We did not realize it back then.””””
Some of us easily saw it, it was very obvious.
Saw it live - hated the whole Hawkeye seeing the therapist stories and this one didn’t change my perception - “IT WAS A BABBBBY!!”
Liked the overall ending though - but doesn’t hold a candle to Newhart’s ending!
Agreed. I was never a huge fan of the show. The witticisms were good but I got bored of the show and stopped watching. It rolled on being very popular lasting far longer than the actual war itself. I watched it sporadically at the start and almost never after those early seasons. I missed the finale since I had no emotional investment in it. I haven’t gone back and watched it either.
And Bobby emerging alive from the shower in Dallas?
I saw it - usually it was Alan Alda doing it
Though I generally liked the show
Speak for yourself, I was a kid and thought it preachy and condescending. Alan Alda especially. The first few seasons were irreverent enough to be watchable but they went more “woke” as time went by.
Agreed.
I remember being quite affected and saddened by it, and it was a catharsis that finally spurred me to make a career change, which worked out quite well.
Wasn’t that in the final episode? (Not sure. I thought it was.)
I never watched it. To this day, I can’t stand Alan Alda.
Mash was good for the first few seasons, but eventually turned into one of those shows that should have ended after 4 or 5 seasons. Just like the original Law and Order.
“doesn’t hold a candle to Newhart’s ending!”
You beat me to it. Best series finale ever!
I do not remember the details of the episode. I was a college junior and went to a party to watch the final episide after my part time job.
