East to Alaska

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin flew to Alaska to meet with President Trump in an effort to resolve the long-running war with Ukraine. (Too many geographically handicapped people believed SNL’s skit deriding Sarah Palin, asserting that she had said she could see Russia from her home, and they were surprised to learn how short an eastward trip from Russia is to the United States.) For a long time, corporate media largely has framed the war as one of an innocent party viciously attacked by a big neighbor, one that is worthy of unending military and financial support. As Trump has signaled, he’s had enough and wants Ukraine’s neighbors. whose interest is greater than ours, to step up, several Western European leaders have mouthed support. In advance of the summit, Stephen Bryen set out some relevant facts most of which are not well-publicized elsewhere:

Support for the war has dropped substantially in Ukraine: “More than three years into the war, Ukrainians’ support for continuing to fight until victory has hit a new low. In Gallup’s most recent poll of Ukraine -- conducted in early July -- 69% say they favor a negotiated end to the war as soon as possible, compared with 24% who support continuing to fight until victory.

This marks a nearly complete reversal from public opinion in 2022, when 73% favored Ukraine fighting until victory and 22% preferred that Ukraine seek a negotiated end as soon as possible. Yet, Zelensky continues doing whatever he can to sabotage the Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska and to behave as if Ukraine's army still has some hope of winning a war they are clearly losing.”

Europe is in no realistic position to enforce any ceasefire which might be agreed upon: “A European military contingent is, theoretically, supposed to enforce

So most Ukrainians know the war is lost...and that the Z man is an idiot. Time to deal.

East to Alaska:

The United States flag was raised on October 18, 1867, now called Alaska Day, and the region changed from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. Previously, the dateline was the eastern border of Alaska, now it was the western border.

Therefore, for residents, Friday, October 6, 1867, was followed by Friday, October 18, 1867—two Fridays in a row because of the 12-day shift in the calendar minus one day for the date-line shift.

Technically, one can walk from one country to the other (in the winter time)......it’s only 2.4 miles.

from the article: "Support for the war has dropped substantially in Ukraine: 'More than three years into the war, Ukrainians’ support for continuing to fight until victory has hit a new low.
In Gallup’s most recent poll of Ukraine -- conducted in early July -- 69% say they favor a negotiated end to the war as soon as possible, compared with 24% who support continuing to fight until victory.' "

No, Biden's slogan in 2022 was, "for as long as it takes", which was not a strategy for victory, only for avoiding or prolonging defeat.
Since Ukraine's failed offensives of 2023 and the Kursk incursions of 2024, Ukraine has demonstrated no serious offensive capabilities, meaning the war is strictly Russia's choice on when to stop fighting.

What "peace deal" terms are Ukrainians willing to accept today?
Nobody knows, but one thing they will certainly require are security guarantees from Europeans.
Without them, Ukraine cannot exist as an independent country, and nobody has yet produced a poll saying Ukrainians are willing to commit national suicide.

from the article: "This marks a nearly complete reversal from public opinion in 2022, when 73% favored Ukraine fighting until victory and 22% preferred that Ukraine seek a negotiated end as soon as possible.
Yet, Zelensky continues doing whatever he can to sabotage the Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska and to behave as if Ukraine's army still has some hope of winning a war they are clearly losing."

The last jab is complete BS, signaling only that the author is drinking Russian propaganda Koolaid.

MtClimber: "Europe wants to drag the USA into this war."

What are you babbling about?
The US is already in the war, according to Pres. Trump, to to the tune of some $350 billion in aid, plus a long list of economic sanctions against Russia.
By that measure, Europe still lags behind with only circa $150 billion in aid to Ukraine and still buying Russian energy.

So, the real issue now is, who will provide troops to enforce the cease-fire and guarantee Ukraine's sovereignty?
The answer is: not the USA.
And, if it's also: not the Europeans, then Ukraine has indeed lost the war, and will be annexed by Russia, it's people killed, enslaved or driven out of Ukraine.

But, much as our Russian propagandists might love to see that, I don't think that's where we're headed.

Probably Moscow. It’s not so far that a plane would need stops. A talking head said it’s about the same flying time as from DC to Anchorage.

A Russian suggested building a bridge for railroads across the 2.5 miles. It would make trade better. Someday it will be made but long after the last Neo-Con is buried.

You can nonstop ATL-ANC.

And you can darn sure nonstop Vladivostok - Elmendorf. That is barely more than a hop, skip and a jump.

Yeah; but Putin lives in Moscow. What’s he gonna do — drive to Vladivostok from Moscow and then fly? Seems not efficient.

A likely refueling stop?

While you can’t see Elmendorf from Russia, the point is, in modern terms, it is close.

If Putin’s flight from Russia to Anchorage was nonstop, where did it originate?

According to Suchomimus on YouTube, he took a train to Magadan on Russia’s East Coast. (I cannot find documentation for this)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBorGYhLFbg&ab_channel=Suchomimus

As far as Putin goes, he’s believed to be on a six-year-old Tupolev Tu-214 with the registration code RA-64531, operating as flight RSD539. He’s only making the short journey from Magadan (GDX), and that plane is expected to land at Elmendorf Air Force Base (EDF), which is also where the meting is taking place. That’s only a 1,957-mile flight, so it should only take around four hours. After the meeting, he’s expected to depart immediately.

There’s an old story about a pond that will die when choked off by pond scum. The scum doubles every day - and in 30 days will cover the whole pond - at which point it dies. Now on what day will half the pond be covered??

On day 29. The point of no return happens quickly to a person watching the process in the comfort of it seeming to ‘take forever’ to go critical.

Europe is becoming Muslim. China - our largest trading partner is also an enemy. That’s never been the case before. Generally our friends are also our trading partners. The Z man suspended voting shortly after the war started and closed down churches after that... He outlawed men of military age from leaving the country. Ukraine was known for corruption and money laundering for ‘elites’...paying of the drug addicted whore mongers of western ‘elitist’ like Biden... You speak like the ‘contest’ is between a free, loving democracy and a totalitarian state... and that NATO is still the people who fought with during World War II... (by the War, Russia was on our side against the Germans in World WarII) I want what’s best for the US first and what’s fair for the rest of the world that also stops wars.

The US ran a coup in Ukraine, Russia had a response. WE are the ones who upset the balance of power. Zelensky was installed precisely to poke the Russian Bear.

Any nation would react similarly, if an opposing military force cozies up against their border.

Why does Russia need containment? WTF are they going to do, and when is the last time they attacked Europe? Going after Germany in WW 2? Wasn’t that close to 100 years ago?

The Soviets are gone, how about the NATO go the same direction, dissolve, and the US go back to pre-WW2 standing?

If Europe wants protection, DO IT YOURSELF.
