Trump: Putin ready to sign non-aggression deal, wants Ukraine's Donbas in return

During a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following the Alaska summit with Putin, U.S. President Donald Trump said that the Russian leader insists on gaining control over the entire Donbas region

Bloomberg reported the information.

According to sources, during the phone call, Trump noted that the final decision on the territories should be made by Kyiv, but Putin’s position remains unchanged. Russia wants full control over Donetsk and Luhansk regions, even though its forces have currently captured only part of these areas.

If Kyiv agrees, Moscow is ready to drop claims to the parts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions still under Ukrainian control, effectively freezing the frontline there.

President Zelenskyy has repeatedly rejected any possibility of ceding territory.

Additionally, sources said that in talks with European leaders, Trump expressed willingness to support security guarantees for Ukraine, provided they do not involve NATO. The president suggested that Putin would agree to this.

Trump claims Putin open to new written agreement

Moreover, as Trump emphasized in talks with European leaders after the Alaska summit, the Russian leader is reportedly even willing to provide a written guarantee of no further armed aggression against Ukraine or any EU country, if he is given full control over the territories of Ukraine’s Donetsk and Luhansk regions, including areas currently under Ukrainian control.

This information was reported on the evening of August 16 by New York Times correspondent Steven Erlanger in Berlin.

“In return, Mr. Putin offered a cease-fire in the rest of Ukraine at current battle lines and a written promise not to attack Ukraine or any European country again, the senior officials said,” the NYT article states.

In response, European leaders reportedly reminded Trump that Putin “has broken similar promises before.”

Deal would have to allow NATO forces, (Euros) on the new frontier with significant troops/weapons...and free movement in and out of the disputed areas. No joining NATO for however long for UKR

Putin has claimed his actions were protective, not aggressive.

A non-aggression clause would not stop like future action.

Pull out of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. These provinces are overwhelmingly Ukrainian.

if Russia were to leave them the war would end.

😂😂😂😂

“To the victor goes the Spoils” has existed since the beginning of time. “Z” is just plain ignorant...

Putin is almost 73 (October) and seems in good shape physically. I can see him easily living another 10+ years.

He is a teetotaler, doesn’t smoke, isn’t overweight, and regularly exercises. His cousin recently died at 91, both his parents lived into their late 80s.

FWIW Putin can rule until 2036 according to the Russian Constitution, (if the constitution means anything)

If that happens, I wonder what financial price President Trump will need from Putin - if any.

Make the deal or more land will be lost and more Ukrainians will die.

Sounds like General Kellogg is AGAIN trying to shove his crap into the mix.

Trump, no doubt at this point, knows the rules for ending the conflict, and that includes the liberation of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson, and Zelensky will find out today that those are the terms...either agree, or fight on without Trump’s help.

If Kyiv agrees, Moscow is ready to drop claims to the parts of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions still under Ukrainian control, effectively freezing the frontline there.

So, Ukraine must concede the parts of both that are under Russian control along with Donetsk and Lugansk.

And, I guarantee the non-aggression pact will also apply to Ukraine. There is no chance Russia is tolerating another Ukrainian military build up, the kind that occurred when it broke the Minsk Accords.

This exactly what I've been saying would be the agreement all along.

You, on the other hand, predicted an unconditional ceasefire yesterday.

"Z" already dropped his plan...Get to be NATO, start a little squirmish...and everyone has to come to our aid...

So no....No NATO for Ukraine.

I don’t remember the person’s name but I’ve read more than once that Putin’s likely successor is worse than Putin.

It would make for interesting alternate history either way.

Help Japan, and the tsar falls early and is replaced by moderates.
Then maybe no Lenin.

Help Russia, and Japan gets humbled.
Then maybe no Pearl Harbor.

Alex and Alexander are convinced that these types of articles are originating from General Kellogg, in his flailing attempts to get some fingerprints on something, so he won’t go down in history as the TOTAL FAILURE that he is.

It’s extremely important to note that both General Kellogg and Lindsey Graham WERE NOT invited to Alaska, and that Trump’s delegation included all of the high-level REALISTS in his administration, which include Vance, Tulsi, Hegseth, and especially Witkoff.

The Neocons had their chance with Trump, and once again FAILED MISERABLY, so Trump appears to be done with them.

Correction:

Trump: Putin ready to sign non-aggression deal, wants THE RUSSIAN Donbas in return…”

The Russian Donbass has been Russian for centuries, and will remain Russian….
A reality check.

To enter into a trade deal with asian Russia.

For energy and mineral exploration and development along the Siberian pacific area.

That drives a wedge between China and Russia. Puts stress on that relationship.

Stay away from European Russia for the time being.

People do not understand that there are two Russias. European and Asian.

Its easier to ship across the Pacific to here than to ship through places like the Black Sea and having to deal with countries like Turkey.

Stay away from Europe.

The only thing that will force Putin to give up his goal of taking Ukrainian territory is the presence of troops from other nations, including the US, and that’s not going to happen. That’s unfortunate, but it’s reality. Also, the “never stop fighting” contingent here on FR seem oblivious to the fact Ukraine is running out of young men as cannon fodder. This war has to come to an end, with neither side able to claim victory.

Giving up even part of Zaporozhye and Kherson is a “ big deal” since the Russian duma voted to make them part of the RF after they voted by referendum to join Russia.

I would guess the Nuc Power Plant stays under Russian control or maybe an international team. Since the Ukes tried and failed by attacks to make it a dirty bomb many times in the past until the IAEA moved in a monitoring team. And eastern Ukraine will need power to rebuild.

If Z wants to dither, the territory in Donetsk and Luhansk not yet captured…could be by fall. At the cost of another 5,000 or so mostly Uke lives per week.

I presume Trumps team got no-bullsh*t casualty counts per side from the Russians. And will confront Zelensky with his role in sending over a million men to die to achieve absolutely nothing except what Russia chose to pull back from early in the war ( Kharkov and Kherson city)

Japan was also a parliamentary democracy, but the military functioned outside of it, essentially in the 1930s there was a Civil War in Japan, with the militarists ultimately prevailing. But who is to say under a different circumstance, it would have turned out different?
