The Trump administration’s immigration policies are affecting workers and driving, in part, a decline in tourism, including international tourists, to Las Vegas, according to workers and the largest labor union in the state of Nevada.
Visitors to Las Vegas overall dropped 11.3% in June 2025, compared to the same month last year. According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, international visitors to one of the world’s largest tourist destinations dropped 13% in June.
“A lot of departments are having a lot of layoffs,” said Norma Torres, a housekeeper for eight years at Mandalay Bay and a member of the Culinary Union, who has worked in the hospitality industry since she was 18 years old. “In the housekeeping department, the people on call are barely called into work.”
Canada is Nevada’s largest international market. Flair Airlines, a Canadian airline, reported a 55% drop in passengers compared to last year. Air Canada reported a 13.2% drop in passengers from May to June this year to Las Vegas, and one third lower compared to last year.
Trump administration officials have reportedly pushed for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agents to arrest 3,000 people a day as part of their anti-immigration agenda. They have subsequently denied that those quotas exist. But they have continued to revoke immigration statuses, delayed action for childhood arrivals, and other humanitarian immigration programs.
“If you tell the rest of the world you’re not welcome, they are going to listen. Our members are telling us that they’re quite nervous, and that’s why they’re calling it a Trump slump,” said Ted Pappageorge, secretary treasurer of Culinary Workers Union Local 226.
But the Ice raids, trade wars with trading partners and fears that rising tariffs will hit the finances of potential visitors are all having an impact...

It couldn’t be all the extra fees, the increased cost of everything from food to entertainment, the homeless and drug problem contaminating the Strip and the state of air travel.... Got to be Trump.
LOL, just blame Trump for all your failures.
Yup.
Can illegal aliens be dues paying members these days?
Vegas used to be cheap because they wanted you to waste money gambling
Now it’s expensive and I can gamble on my phone from my house (not that I do that.)
Is it Trump’s fault that the Vegas Strip has turned into a sh#thole of “aspiring rappers” smoking and dealing weed on the sidewalk?
Wait a minute. So it was the illegal aliens spending all their money at the casinos? Now that is gone??
That is what the headline implies.
Then a few lines down, they talk about Canadians not coming to Vegas. Now, that I can understand. They are not fans of being told they will be a 51 state and they prefer socialism.
Typical misleading headlines.
Canadians can stay home. That is their right.
Besides, gambling is too easy to find locally or on some app to spend all the money to fly to Vegas to play.
Yeah, call it a “slump” and don’t say “online gambling” because that gives away that this isn’t temporary.

Canadians are notoriously cheap. Prices in Vegas are waaaaay higher than they used to be.........................
It’s Trumps war on the cartels having success, He’s chewing away at their disposable cash and easy access to America
Las Vegas is like if Ticketmaster was a city.
Las Vegas is like if an arcade was a city..................
I was in Vegas a few weeks ago.
Yes, it looks much less than years past.
I didn’t rent a car. Uber everywhere. Every driver was Hispanic with marginal English. But I think multi years in Vegas for them. When I commented things looked empty, they said they ARE much lower.
And then it was interesting. An even mix. Trump Trump Trump and his tariffs and the Canadians are staying home! The other half say people are staying home but not blaming Trump for it, and that supported an increase in Hispanic Trump votes in Nevada.
One thing they all agreed on . . . not everyone should be renting cars. Not a one of them said at your age haha, but there was always a glance. Regardless, they are right. I used to rent cars in Vegas every trip. Only after years of learning the streets did that make any sense, and then the streets changed.
Uber is the way to go. Those guys know how to avoid the Strip.
Has there even been a “new” show or performance there lately? You can’t keep running the Beatles “LOVE” or Michael Jackson’s “ONE” and get anyone excited. David Copperfield...really? And Kelly Clarkson at Cesears Palace? She’s a 3rd rate act. The Sphere is hundreds of dollars for a ticket. I’m not interested in a football game there. Even parking is now $30+ a day at casinos. T mobile arena has few good shows.
You can gamble on your smart phone....Has Vegas had it’s run?
Don’t know about the rest of the US, but in this Western state, if I want to give my money away, I can drive 25 miles to an Indian casino. No air fare, no TSA groping, cheaper rates for rooms, food, etc. Not to mention Online gaming.
I guess the one “Trump effect” I can think of is by hiring illegal aliens, and paying them under the table, the casinos avoid the $12/Hr minimum wage.
