Jags kicker knocks home a 70-yard field goal for what would be an NFL record if it wasn't the preseason

Guys, I've got great news ... football is (sort of) back.

And with the return of NFL ball we've already got the kick of the year. And all time, for that matter.

Yes, that was a SEVENTY yard field goal. He kicked it from his own 40 yard line through the uprights.

However...

Yes, preseason football is not real football. So the miraculous kick doesn't count, unfortunately.

Little is in his second year in the league after being drafted out of Arkansas in the 6th round (insanely high for a kicker) and being the youngest kicker ever selected in the draft.

He was perfect on extra points last year, and 27 of 29 on field goals.

Those are huge numbers. But the biggest number of them all is 70. And it doesn't even count in the record books.

If they have the 3-Point Shot in basketball, there should be a 4-Point FG for FGs over 70 yards.

Furthermore, every doink should be one point, so if you doink and miss, you still get one point, a double-doink is two points, or you could even get the quadruple doink for four points. And if it’s good you add the three points, so a good quadruple doink field goal would be worth 7 points, and if it’s over 70 yards, it’s 8 points.

I would bet that longer kicks are made in NFL practice under game like conditions. They had to change the kickoff rules because even when they kicked off from the 35 yard line the ball would often sail out of the end zone. Making a field goal that long is possible if all necessities are met.
IMHO.

On the last play of the half or last play of the game, this kid might have a better chance than a 60-yard Hail Mary pass.

We were visiting friends and went to watch their son’s high school football game. It was quite a windy evening and the kicker hit a wind assisted 70 yarder.

That's a very good point.

But it would matter.

I meant some game where it's the fourth quarter and Jacksonville is losing 34-6 or something. Losing 34-9 with a 70yd field goal statistically wouldn't be any different than losing 41-6 with a missed field goal.

I bet that kick would’ve gone around 80 or so yards in Denver, especially if the wind was at his back.

All Dallas needs is just two things:

An Offense and a Defense...............

So the ball was on their own 47. If a team starts on their 30 they only have to gain 17 yards to get into field goal range. It will change end of game strategies.

“ It’s just like kicking an 80 yarder in practice. It doesn’t mean anything.”

Guessing it meant something to him

And back then attempts over 50 yards were rare

That could be because football kickers couldn't kick a ball that distance consistently using the straight-on style, thus rarely attempted it (yes, I know that Tom Dempsey held the record for a long time, but I'm talking in general).

It took soccer-style kickers (or even rugby kickers) to show the advantage of kicking that style instead of simply "straight-on".

I didn’t think that anybody could be worse than Jerry Jones.

Stephen Jones is worse...............

It’s funny that these record setting (or not quite setting, honestly they should count this) are so often basically at sea level. The 63 yarder in 1970 that was the record for decades happened at Tulane. It got tied at Mile High (and other places) a few times. Finally broken by 1 yard at Mile High in 2013. 65 yarder in Baltimore, 584 feet “up”. And the current record is 66, in Detroit, 601 feet.

And I’m sure when the next record is set, it will be against the Lions.
