Jags kicker knocks home a 70-yard field goal for what would be an NFL record if it wasn't the preseason

Guys, I've got great news ... football is (sort of) back.

And with the return of NFL ball we've already got the kick of the year. And all time, for that matter.

Yes, that was a SEVENTY yard field goal. He kicked it from his own 40 yard line through the uprights.

However...

Yes, preseason football is not real football. So the miraculous kick doesn't count, unfortunately.

Little is in his second year in the league after being drafted out of Arkansas in the 6th round (insanely high for a kicker) and being the youngest kicker ever selected in the draft.

He was perfect on extra points last year, and 27 of 29 on field goals.

Those are huge numbers. But the biggest number of them all is 70. And it doesn't even count in the record books.

It needs to be in the record books, with an asterisk.

Wonder how far it would go in Denver?

I’m guessing he’ll do it again. He’s confident and proven it’s within reach for him. Good job.

They probably drug-tested right after the kick.

Since the Jags aren’t going anywhere this year, he should be given at least one chance to kick a 70 during the season, in a game where missing it wouldn’t matter.

Yeah he hit a 70-yarder at sea level on grass in humid Jacksonville.

Would like to see him get a shot at Mile High Stadium with the wind at his back, or at least a try off the turf in a climate-controlled dome.

Kickers are insanely good now.

At the time of the merger, about 60% of the Field Goal attempts were successful, now it’s around 85%. And back then attempts over 50 yards were rare, even with the goalposts at the goal line.

What’s the record in pregame practice?

Nice achievement. But, it’s a meaningless exhibition game.

Does anyone keep official records of exhibition games?

It sounds like officially this won’t count for anything.

But this guy seems to be a great kicker, if he can hit it from that distance.

Of you watch the video he had a few yards to spare.

There was zero wind which no doubt helped but the humidity here it in the damp zone.

It’s just like kicking an 80 yarder in practice. It doesn’t mean anything.

Little is in his second year in the league after being drafted out of Arkansas in the 6th round (insanely high for a kicker) and being the youngest kicker ever selected in the draft.

I have to correct that:

Sebastian Janikowski is the most iconic kicker in Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders history, holding nearly every franchise kicking record and playing for the team for 17 seasons from 2000 to 2017.

He is the only kicker in NFL history to be selected in the first round of the draft, chosen 17th overall in 2000, and he tied the NFL record for the longest field goal at 63 yards (tied with Tom Dempsey of the Saints), a feat he accomplished three times.

Janikowski is the Raiders' all-time leading scorer with 1,913 points, including 436 field goals made on a career 80.4% accuracy rate.

His legacy is cemented by his powerful leg, which also led to a record 76-yard field goal attempt in 2008, the longest in NFL history.

My best to Mr. Little. I hope he smashes that record.

Tom Dempsey’s kick was from his own 37-yard line, but back then the goalposts were at the end zone.

And of course it came against the Lions.

But it would matter. If he missed the opposing team would get the ball at their own 40. Short field and at least an easy field goal. I would assume that's why we don't see a lot of very long FGA...even though there are probably kickers who routinely kick some bombers in practice.

I hate to mess with historical rules, but kicking a field goal doesn’t seem to equal half the points of a touchdown based on difficulty. Maybe FG’s should be worth 2 pts :)

Back in the early 80’s at my HS alma mater, our placekicker still had the square-toed shoe and kicked straight-on rather than the soccer-style sidewinder method.
