Japan sees record drop in population in 2024 {0.75%or nearly a million less people}

The population of Japan shrank by 0.75% in 2024, marking a record high since records began in 1968, according to official data.

The decline amounted to 908,574 people, the largest population drop since records began in 1968.

This is the 16th straight year in which the Japanese population has shrunk, reducing it to 120.65 million people down from a peak of 126.6 million in 2009, according to the Internal Affairs Ministry.

Japanese nationals aged 65 or over made up 30% of the country's population, while 60% of Japanese nationals were between 15 and 64.

Although many more economically developed countries have aging populations, Japan has the second-oldest, after the tiny state of Monaco, according to the World Bank.

Japan also saw births fall below 700,000 for the first time on record, according to Health Ministry data released back in June.

Some 686,061 newborns were recorded in 2024, the lowest number since records began in 1899.

...Tokyo is the most populous city in Japan with 14 million residents. The population has continued to grow in the capital city and Chiba Prefecture.

The number of foreign nationals in Japan, however, was 3.67 million people as of January 1, 2025, making it the highest number since records began in 2013

..., a new anti-immigration party has been appealing to voters by placing the blame for Japan's economic problems on foreigners living in the country.

Sanseito, a new far-right party with a charismatic leader, Sohei Kamiya, came up big in Japan's parliamentary election by running on an anti-immigration, nationalist platform under the slogan "Japanese First."

A million fewer people. Fewer is a count. Less is a “degree”.

Specifically, “fewer” is used with countable nouns (things you can count individually, like “apples” or “people”), while “less” is used with uncountable nouns (things you can’t count individually, like “water” or “time”).

Yeah…it’s a grammar police thing. LOL

They need to learn to love the existence of children again. If they don’t learn this, they will disappear as a people.

Socialism was always a weapon of depopulation and the architects knew it.

what they need are millions of Aztec Indians from the failed empire. Then they will truly be strong. Nancy Pelosi told me so.

They need to learn to love the existence of children again. If they don’t learn this, they will disappear as a people.

Planned Parenthood has destroyed so many millions of black babies that if that had not occurred, blacks would be over 20% of our population and increasing, instead of 11% and in decline.

When a population voluntarily murders it's own future youth, then destroys the ones that managed to survive by having them {over 75%} be without a father in the home, you get what we have in every major city in the USA.

Every civilization that has had population decline because of low birth rate, will cease to exist because of simple math.

News flash...people die, and if the birth replacement rate is too low, well...

IMO it would be far better for Japan to not allow many foreigners in - particularly ones incompatible with living in a civilized society. Yes, Japan’s population would decline. So what? They’ve got 120 million people crammed into a land area about the size of Montana. If it became less crowded, it could easily improve the quality of life. Real estate would become much more affordable for example.

We can sell them some miggies. We’ve got 21 million of them we don’t know what we are going to do with them but we’re going broke feeding them and being their private ATMs.

Yes, Japan pushed the vax and it may be a problem for them in the future if not already. Declining birth rate is more social than physical at the moment. They have a generation of men who would rather play x-box than chase skirts. I know a couple of Marines over there. It was not impossible to date a Japanese woman back in the day, but it was not easy either. Usually the woman was like the second daughter in a family, no real prospects etc… I dated a number of Japanese's women who at 28 or 29 were considered poor marriage prospects. My friends said that has all changed a lot of Japanese women just want to date, marry and have babies.

I agree with the Japanese politician that wants to restrict immigration. But they need to be careful. Americans who have assimilated after years stationed there like to buy homes there and live between Japan and the USA. The problem is not them, they are older, and married to a Japanese. The real problem is the other immigrants who never assimilate and demand people adjust to them. Saw a few of them in Kobe earlier this year. Also saw quite a few Americans who live in Kobe and Osaka who were not attached to the military. For the most part they hated tourists and preferred to be left alone. The immigrants Japan does not want are the same ones, Poland, and Hungary do not want.

Real Estate is already reasonable. I have seen houses for sale on large lots for well under a 100K. One house was 150,000 USD and it was a fantastic house beautiful garden, roomy and modern but old. You could not touch that house even where I am for under 400K USD. Japanese owned homes, passed them down to their children who also owned homes when they died. Property taxes and maintenance was too much and homes were just abandoned. I saw homes offered for FREE, just have to repair. Could not tear them down and rebuild. Some were in okay shape most not. Japanese friend told me they are free but expensive since many of the craftsman need to rebuild long since retired.

Yes, Japan may become the society with the most active application of robots - out of necessity.

Me - I’d prefer the Japanese had more babies; the South Korean’s too.
