Why Chubby Checker Staged His Own Rock Hall Induction and Won’t Attend the Official Ceremony

Chubby Checker will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on Nov. 8, but the singer has made clear he won't be in attendance.

And interestingly, the Rock Hall is on board with that. At Checker's July 27 concert in Des Plaines, Illinois, the organization presented him with his induction trophy early. Additionally, Checker then explained from the stage in an interview that he purposely had his manager book him a concert for the evening of Nov. 8.

"I told my manager, 'Make sure when we go to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the induction that I'm doing what I love doing the most, being in front of an audience. A live audience, not a television audience,'" Checker explained (via Future Rock Legends). His manager has purportedly done exactly as requested, though exact details of where Checker will be performing that night have yet to be revealed.

Checker did, however, alert the Rock Hall: "We're not coming. We have a gig."

As far as why Checker is uninterested in attending the November ceremony, he explained that he'd far rather be playing shows to his current fans.

"Chubby goes to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, he's an old guy, he's probably retired, he's not doing anything. Maybe he has crutches and he's coming to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to get his little award and go back home," he explained. "I said, 'No. Let's be doing a show like I'm doing today.' This shows that I'm alive and well and the audience is wonderful and my dream is still being fulfilled, and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is happening all at the same time."

Who Else Is Not Attending the 2025 Rock Hall Ceremony? Checker is not the only inductee this year to decline the invitation. The veteran bassist Carol Kaye has also said she won't be attending. (The 90-year-old is set to be inducted via the Musical Excellence category.)

In a Facebook post, Kaye said that she is "turning it down because it wasn't something that reflects the work that studio musicians do and did in the golden era of the 1960s recording hits.

"I refuse to be part of a process that is something else rather than what I believe in, for others' benefit and not reflecting on the truth. We all enjoyed working with EACH OTHER. Thank you for understanding."

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a must see. The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductions and all the politics, not so much.

Chubby Checker is ninety years old.

And he ain’t in the HOF.

That’s a ton of disrespect in my book.

My mistake.

I misread the story as Chubby being 90.

He’s ONLY 83.

That said it’s still disrespectful he ain’t in it yet.

“The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a must see.”

The wife and I been to Cleveland to the Hall of Fame. It was a real snoozer. It was not worth the 5 hour drive from home, even though I had other business in Cleveland. First off, there are too many in the HOF that are not even rock and roll. And them they had to include the rappers?

As a Philly guy, he’s pissed the Rock Hall Of Fame isn’t in Philly. The Twist is still a great song and dance.

He’s alive and well, we saw him earlier this year and the show was great.the best part was all the people on stage with him doing the twist for the last song!

Off topic — but does anyone have an opinion on the Baseball HOF in Cooperstown? I’ve never been, but I’ll be passing by in September and thought I might drop in. I’m not a huge baseball fan, and I’m mostly interested in early baseball, deadball era and up into the 1950s or so. Is it an enjoyable trip? I’m not sure I want to commit a day to it.

Cooperstown is a throwback little town. It’s very pretty up there and the museum is done up nicely. Go in the fall and be sure to check out the Ommegamg brewery.

Congratulations to Chubby Checker and I love the way he’s celebrating it. And yes, it’s late in happening. I played for a guy who should have been in his state’s country music hall of fame but wasn’t. So, I nominated him, and now he’s in. Another guy told me, “You get all your big awards way after all your accomplishments.”

Chubby Checker is a gimmick musical artist who has absolutely no business being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Musically, calling him third rate would be an insult to third rate musicians everywhere.

His only hit is a song he didn't even write.

Spinal Tap has a better argument to be inducted into the Rock and roll Hall of Fame than does Chubby Checker.

“Chubby Checker”

Did he do anything besides Blueberry Hill and a twist song?

Mr. Campbell’s Chin,

Respectfully, I disagree. Stevie Nicks is in the R&R HoF and the woman sounds like a yodelling goat. Does George Michael belong in the HoF (or it’s mens’ room?). They also overlooked KISS forever. I think Mr. Checker deserves a space.

If they finally inducted the Sex Pistols, they can induct Mr. Checker.

Let’s just be greatful they never thought about The Knack.
