This explains the above,

Peter Underwood

Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, University of Auckland, Waipapa Taumata Rau

What is this "academic" smoking in his ivory tower?

Wokeism is dying, just look at Jaguar, but it will still linger on in "academia" and not the real business world.

Agreed. Woke promotions work only with companies with niche target markets of customers already into that idea. Like a purple hair dye company promoting “body positivity”. LOL

The only middle-ground that is justified is that which ultimately protects the shareholder's earnings, growth, and dividends.

In other words, in order to avoid the cost of lawsuits, and publicity of activist investors who question the company's decisions to maximize the bottom-line, corporations will seek to put on a softer public face. They will use terms like sustainability, environmental impact, and equal opportunity in hiring.

I wouldn't blame they if they do, but it would not be a factor in my investment decisions and that is probably true of most all investors.

Underwood isn’t describing a “middle path”, he’s saying that woke ideology can survive in business if corporations do a better job of camouflaging it from those who dislike it.

First of all the term “Corporate” has absolutely nothing in common with “Capitalism”. To relate the two as the same is absolute brainwashing propaganda.

Corporatism:

Corporatism is a sociopolitical and economic system in which interest groups, such as businesses, labor unions, and other associations, play a central role in the governance and regulation of society. This system contrasts with liberal pluralism, where multiple groups compete for influence in a more fragmented manner. In corporatist systems, the state collaborates with major interest groups to formulate and implement policies, aiming for a more cohesive and cooperative approach to societal governance.

At its core, corporatism revolves around the idea that organized interest groups are fundamental to the functioning of society. These groups, representing different sectors such as employers, workers, and other social categories, negotiate and collaborate with the state to develop policies that benefit the collective good. The principle of subsidiarity is central to corporatism, advocating that decisions should be made at the most immediate or local level possible, rather than by a distant central authority. This approach aims to balance the interests of various groups, reduce conflict, and enhance social cohesion by ensuring that all major stakeholders have a voice in the governance process.

Capitalism:

Also known as: free enterprise economy, free market economy, private enterprise economy,

Economic system, dominant in the Western world since the breakup of feudalism, in which most means of production are privately owned and production is guided and income distributed largely through the operation of markets.

Conservative Capitalists should NEVER support the concept of big Corporations and Corporatism or confuse it with Capitalism. They are trying to brainwash us into believing they are the same principle.

They are NOT...

This has been exactly the type of thing you would hear in a business administration class in any liberal school for decades. I heard almost the exact same thing 35 years ago and now we’re seeing it again. Some things never change.

I've been on the "inside" of woke/DEI decisionmaking for a large law firm, and the author vastly underestimates how fear of lawsuits/adverse market consequences pushed companies into making those decisions. A great many of them did it because they felt they had to.

Now that the legal landscape has begun shifting after SCOTUS blasted affirmative action, companies are completely reevaluating those programs.

This author either hasn't gotten the memo, or is just telling fellow lefties what they want to hear to try to keep an audience.

Folks,

1) Socialism is govt owns everything, facism (hitler)is you own it and and govt controls it.

2) This article suggests that the market place will respond to their agenda with out govt. It hasn’t , they need the power of govt for their agenda

3) The assumption for comparison is zero govt or all
government.

4) you may not like this, but capitalism does need some restraint from govt. Even Adam Smith admitted some lawyers were needed.

5) The market place with social involvement does exist. It is a slow process and it should be. It is too slow for many. I cringe every time a freeper per wants another simple law to solve a complex problem. The wheels of justive move slowly as designed. We do not want an efficient governement.

6) we have had WAY TOO MUCH GOVT IN OUR LIVES. The left interprets any reduction in regulation or power as zero involement of govt.
