Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), Texas’s senior senator up for reelection in 2026, announced on Thursday that FBI Director Kash Patel agreed to his request for federal agents to help Texas law enforcement track down and return runaway Democratic lawmakers.
Cornyn wrote a letter on Tuesday urging Patel to help return some 50 state lawmakers who fled the state to try and delay a state House vote on a new congressional map. Democrats are trying to delay the vote by not allowing the GOP-controlled body to have a quorum — a minimum number of members present in order to conduct official business.
Cornyn’s request came a day after the Texas House of Representatives voted to compel the lawmakers to return to the body in order to vote on the highly controversial redistricting effort to try and net the national Republican Party 5 more seats in Congress. Cornyn’s letter accused the absent Democrats of possible criminal acts, without citing any evidence, saying “they may be guilty of bribery or other public corruption offenses.”
The state House officially empowered Texas state troopers and the House’s sergeant-at-arms to track down the members and arrest them, but they would not face any kind of charges under the order. The Texas arrest warrants are also only valid inside Texas’s border – making them purely symbolic and the FBI’s role in enforcing them unclear.
“I am proud to announce that Director Kash Patel has approved my request for the FBI to assist state and local law enforcement in locating runaway Texas House Democrats,” Cornyn said in a statement. “I thank President Trump and Director Patel for supporting and swiftly acting on my call for the federal government to hold these supposed lawmakers accountable.”
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) hit back at the idea of federal agents coming into his state to detain the Democratic lawmakers who fled there. Pritzker told Jessica Yellin on her News Not Noise podcast on Wednesday, saying, “The fact is that you know our local law enforcement protect everybody in Illinois. Our state troopers protect everybody in Illinois and anybody who’s here in Illinois.” He added that “if you haven’t broken federal law” and are in his state, “there’s no way” you can be arrested by the FBI.

“I cannot fathom how this is a federal matter.”
Interstate flight to avoid arrest. Simple. Already a federal law.
“They aren’t going to arrest anyone because there are no criminal charges”
There are arrest warrants.
He has no reason, his illogic is because they are democraps this is how he wants it to work and if they were republicans it should work like it is now and be even more aggressive.
It is ideology and feelings, not logic and reason that are driving his comments.
The Texas legislature gave itself the authority to compel attendance by members—using any method it deemed appropriate.
That includes methods you don’t like.
“”You think that your argument STRENGTHENS the validity of Cornyn’s request?””
What I think, among other things.... is that the GOP needs to ‘stones-up’ and start playing like they mean it. They need to get serious about the ongoing coup-by-the-left that they are faced with. That means... using any means that they can use that does not actually equate to the deaths of their political opponents... because that would be too much “like their opponents”.
Stop whining, IOW. It’s all good. And nobody is going to die over this. The left is just finally getting a slight ‘taste’ of their own medicine (See: Jan 6 treatment of Trump supporters by Democrats in power at the time).
Thanks for the clarification. I recall reading that they made these actions a criminal offense after the last time they pulled this stunt, so I was presenting that information as a protentional charge.
I have not read any official charges being made yet.
“”I think Cornyn’s announcement is just to prop up his chances against Paxton.””
With all due respect... you are right about that (at least...lol). Cornyn’s play-acting like he’s ‘not’ a rabid leftist at his core. But most of us have seen through him like glass.
So you’re saying the states have no role in helping the feds in illegal immigration. WOW!
“And bringing them back how effective with that be? Are they expected to vote to approve the redistricting?”
No, but their presence forms a quorum, that without their presence the Texas legislature cannot hold a vote.
“They crossed state lines in the possible commission of a crime, that allows the state to ask the fad to get involved.”
OK, so this is the explanation that makes sense. Then it’s covered by the Feds.
18 U.S.C. § 1752: Prohibits intentional disruption of government business, which extends to state legislative functions when they affect federal interests.
18 U.S.C. § 595: Prohibits interference by government employees (including state officials) with electoral or governmental processes.
Article IV Section 4 guarantees to the states a republican form of government. Illinois enabling Democrats to block the republican form of government in Texas is unconstitutional interference in another state's government.

“WOW!”
I didn’t say that, but had I done so I’d definitely echo your “WOW!”
“Possible” and “ask” are the two operable words here.
1. Anything’s possible.
2. “Ask” is done through a court order. Or do you think that any state or municipality can pick up the phone for federal interference in a local matter and elicit intervention?
Last but not least, follow me on this: no one has accused the Democrats of breaking a Texas statute.
* They are being accused of a violation of legislative procedure, not of a crime.
BTW, I was speaking in generalities about when someone DOES commit a crime, not this specific case. Regarding this case, looks like Texas, and probably other states, need to come up with a remedy for this when it happens in the future, regardless of which party does it. Looks like more and more we’re being represented by political hacks and children.
Impressive! But wrong.
18 U.S.C. § 1951 The current issue has nothing to do with interstate commerce.
18 U.S.C. § 1752 Deals with breaking into a facility or using violence to disrupt an official function. Irrelevant.
18 U.S.C. § 595 No government employee can interfere in uses his official authority for the purpose of interfering with, or affecting, the nomination or the election of any candidate for the office of President or other candidate. Irrelevant.
Article IV Section 4 protects against invasion or domestic violence. Yet again, irrelevant.
The remedy is to create a crime under Texas law and to make charges before a Texas curt. Neither condition obtains.
Cancel their credit cards and smart phones. Both are state property. Refuse to process any expense reports from the day they left. You’ll be amazed at how fast they reappear.
