Trump slaps additional 25% tariff on India over Russian oil purchases — bringing total rate to 50%

President Trump took executive action Wednesday to hammer India with an additional 25% tariff due to its continued purchases of Russian oil.

The move, which will take effect Aug. 27, will increase the total US tariff rate on India to 50% and comes ahead of Trump’s Friday deadline for Russia to make peace with Ukraine or face secondary tariffs or sanctions — penalties on countries that continue purchasing energy from Moscow.

“The actions and policies of the Government of the Russian Federation continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States,” Trump noted in his executive order.

Executive order

ADDRESSING THREATS TO THE UNITED STATES BY THE GOVERNMENT OF THE RUSSIAN FEDERATION

To deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066, I determine that it is necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem duty on imports of articles of India, which is directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil. In my judgment, imposing tariffs, as described below, in addition to maintaining the other measures taken to address the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066, will more effectively deal with the national emergency described in Executive Order 14066.

Sec. 2. Imposition of Tariffs. (a) I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil.

(b) Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 percent.

What do we import from India? Never seen a “made in India” label.

AI says the US trade deficit with India is $45B.

The products are pharmaceuticals, petroleum (going in both directions!!) and electrical equipment.

India has a 4 million barrel/day consumption excess over its 900K bpd domestic oil production.

For them to send anything petroleum relevant to the US (the AI says $5B/yr) means they have to be doing so with imported oil. Some of it from the US (which makes no sense, the US could do any such processing domestically). Likely from oil imported from elsewhere.

Better yet, cut the H1Bs by at least 50% and employment in the tech world will improve bigly (until Skynet slashes the herd for good).

Reminder . . . this US import of petroleum relevant products need not be questionable, since the bulk of US domestic oil is now shale that tends to be low on kerosene (jet fuel) and diesel. High on gasoline.

All oil is not created equal.

The problem with that is this:

India is a major supplier of pharmaceuticals, particularly generic drugs, to the United States. Approximately 47% of all generic prescriptions in the US are filled by Indian companies. This significant supply contributes to billions of dollars in savings for the US healthcare system. However, recent discussions about reciprocal tariffs could potentially impact this trade relationship.

These freaking tariffs are killing manufacturing in the USA. All our customers don’t know what to do with all this BS uncertainty. And to the idiots on this site that can’t take criticism of Trump…I voted for him 3 times and have a Trump flag out front of my house. Just settle on a tariff and move on….this is killing manufacturing here!

Someone said that 2 months ago and it’s gotten worse. I just lost my job of 38 years due to the policies of the last idiot in office. Now it feels I’m in the same position.

I have driven past the rusted graveyards of countless factories from Detroit through Ohio and Pennsylvania, and on down into Virginia, and other places that constantly remind me exactly what killed manufacturing in the US.

How exactly should Trump force country-sustaining manufacturing back into the US?

So theres no option for billionaires to use their capital to build pharmaceutical manufacturing in the US? It's either stick with India or nothing?

Do what they did in Puerto Rico….zero taxes on manufacturing. Puerto Rico had only a few pharmaceutical companies then went to 0% tax and they had over 250 in a short period. Make them come here….

Agreed 100%. But you're not getting that through Congress on razor thin margins in both Houses. If we pick up some seats in the midterm then that could be a viable option. But as it stands, you're not going to get it. So Trump is left with the mechanism he can use.
