Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova slammed the new United States President Donald Trump's trade policy, describing it as an attempt to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries.
"This US policy constitutes a direct violation of the national sovereignty of states, an attempt to interfere in their internal affairs, not to mention the fact that it generally leads to a slowdown in economic growth, damage to supply chains, and fragmentation of the global economy," the spokeswoman said in a statement.
However, Zakharova noted that neither sanctions nor tariffs "can do anything with the natural course of history," stressing that Russia and its partners intend to boost cooperation "in order to counter illegal unilateral sanctions pressure and form a truly multilateral, fair and equal world order."

The Russians have had over three years to buy machine tools and integrated circuits.
Everything else their arms industry needs can be made in Russia.

But I assure you, Russia won’t draw the short straw.
We’re doing the economic pressure game, while we talk and send our envoy there, while we arm Ukraine but only to a degree and threaten more unless Russia complies, while we publically state we’re putting nuclear armed subs off Russia’s shore... Apply pressure from all directions.
What Trump is doing is smart. He’s creating leverage (at least trying). Apply pressure from all directions and with all tools available. He genuiney wants to end this mess.
But Russia will only go for a settlement if the terms meet their requirements.
The Russians (at that level) are like robots. They are not emotional players, not amateurs, and they know they have the upper hand.
The sanctions whip will have little effect. Biden already pushed things about as far as we can without causing major problems for allies or disturbing relationships we tried hard to build as with India.
Trump will face a major backlash in the West if he tries to win over the Russians with sugar (offer Russia something - ultimately land loss for Ukraine and no NATO for Ukraine).
But it’ll be the sugar that makes Russia agree to a settlement.
It’ll be interesting to see what gets worked out, if anything.
It is in Russia’s best interest to end this also. I hope they don’t try to play hardball and drag it out in an attempt to shave a little more off Ukraine.
