Just another “scientist” who apparently believes he and/or Mr. Hawking are God. What a pitiful existence. And when a few months pass by and nothing happens, will there be an acknowledgement or apology? (Crickets heard here...)

The Inca Empire stood no chance against the Spanish conquistadors, being about a thousand years behind them in technology. Space aliens could be millions of years ahead of us, or more.

Hawking - one of the most over-rated scientists. Ever. Take anything he said with a grain of salt. Alive today, he probably would have spit out 10 more contradictory theories since then.
This is no joke.
We have nuclear weapons. Should we ever acquire FTL travel we become a threat to the galaxy.
Imagine if there was a pack of dogs in a nearby forest that acquired bomb making capabilities. Then they stared travelling outside their forest.
What would any responsible organization do?
Look at mars for a clue.
One bomb to blow off the atmosphere. Later, another bomb to blow off the atmosphere that came out of solution from the soil and water after many years.
No atmosphere, no climate, no life. Problem solved.
Aliens dropping by to wipe us out is way down any list of worries I have.

Hawking is right that we should be cautious in this area. There may be no intelligent life out there or there could be plenty. We just don’t know.

What is true is that AI is accelerating the speed at which events occur. We are in the outer rings of a singularity.
When we emerge on the other side of the singularity in 5-10 years —the world will be entirely different and we will see things entirely differently.
On a much smaller scale the same thing happened between 1995-2000.
We went in as TV world and came out the other side an internet world.
