Las Vegas is experiencing a notable downturn in tourism, with hotel occupancy, visitor numbers and spending all slipping.
Industry data points to several key reasons behind the shift, including rising costs, fewer international travellers, and broader economic uncertainties.
Drop in international visitors and hotel occupancy
According to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, hotel occupancy dropped to just 66.7% in early July—a sharp fall from the previous year—and international visitors.
Domestic arrivals also fell by around 6.5%, and traffic through Harry Reid International Airport declined nearly 4% overall.

I can’t stomach flying into Harry Reid International Airport. Not a good look Nevada.
Visited Vegas in 1973. Have relatives all over the place.
Clean town, hardly any crime, nice place to stay and great food.
Sad to see it ruined...................
Yep, all true. The casinos didn’t put up with bums/idiots. You behaved or you got roughly escorted out.
I can’t help but think of the fictional Senator Pat Geary in “The Godfather II” calling Nevada “this clean country.”
They say Geary was based on Senator McCarran, but he sure seemed more like Harry Reid to me.
Agree....it’s the corporate “Mob” now. Even the movie Casino acknowledges it at the end. Sad......
A crass working man’s heaven that became too expensive for uncertain times.
And as long as you weren’t with the mob, they left you alone and you were safe.
See #32.
You didn't go during the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Or Super Bowl LVIII.
Yeah.....the mob didn’t tolerate crime other than what they did. They were smart. People wouldn’t come and that ain’t good for the skim. The good ole days.
The Nevada state and Vegas municipal governments kept jacking up taxes in the mistaken assumption that as the first casino town, Vegas had a pull its rivals lacked. Got to the point that for potential visitors, Vegas was more expensive than hometown rivals while also offering fewer perks, and this is before hotels, air fares and car rentals. So increasingly gamblers are opting for the hometown competition instead of the hassle of a Vegas trip.
But if they offered good deals wouldn't they get traffic from people turned off by the high cost of Vegas?
I give up - what’s “the real reason”?
I think the real reason is that the US aid money dried up for all the people getting it and we’re blowing in Vegas casinos.
It will always be Mccarran to me.
That is the most significant POS to get from this article...
I prefer Tahoe, anyway.
yeah...and another crappy thing they did was go to paper tickets instead of actual coins in the slots. Back in the day, when somebody hit on a slot, you heard live coins and it was exciting.
All tickets now I believe. Crappy.....no fun, no noise, no excitement.
The people running Vegas now don’t care about making visitors into life time fans who return to the city every few years. They want quick cash and thats it
it used to be cheap to stay, eat, and drink.
And you’d spend your money gambling..
Now it is just too expensive. By the time you’ve paid for your room. You have no $ to gamble.
Not enticing enough to go to Vegas to visit as an over priced theme park.
