David Letterman has backed his successor Stephen Colbert and suggested CBS canceled The Late Show because he was 'always shooting his mouth off' about Donald Trump.
The 78-year-old late-night legend created The Late Show in 1993 after NBC denied him the chance to succeed Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show.
Colbert took over for Letterman in 2015 and took the show in a decidedly more political direction but despite leading in the ratings, a shrinking late-night landscape led CBS to claim losses in the tens of millions of dollars.
In his first comment on the show's cancellation, Letterman noted that his show was more about political satire than his version of The Late Show but was still complimentary, calling the decision by CBS 'pure cowardice.'
'I think one day, if not today, the people at CBS who have manipulated and handled this, they’re going to be embarrassed, because this is gutless,' he told former Late Show producers Barbara Gaines and Mary Barclay.
Letterman then said that he believed CBS was acting on behalf of Skydance CEO and incoming Paramount CEO David Ellison to make their lives easier after they acquire Paramount, taking away a constant critic of Trump.
'Hey boys, here’s what we’re gonna do: not only are we gonna get rid of that guy, we’re gonna get rid of the entire franchise so you don’t have to worry about another guy. It’s gone,' Letterman said.
The long-time talk show host noted CBS's $16million settlement with the Trump administration over a deceptively edited interview with election rival Kamala Harris, which Colbert had previously mocked as a 'big fat bribe.'

David Meatball on the top of a Christmas Tree Letterman
Well, if Dave Letterman says so...🙄
You are welcome!
Never watched a late show... I'm usually in bed (not asleep) by 11. Dad has some CDs of Johnny Carson...funny...
Is anyone else puzzled, at the reaction to Colbert being canceled?
Has there ever been this much outrage about a TV show being canceled?
Haven’t TV shows come and gone , over the entire history of television?
And what’s with some of these more radical types saying, somehow this is a threat to our freedom of speech and constitutional rights?
Does someone such as Colbert have a constitutional right, to do a show on national television , where he will take shots at Trump?
And are they really saying that CBS management, do not have the right to run their TV network as they see fit? That somehow they are required to keep a guy on the air, whose main so called “jokes” , are taking shots at Trump?
I was pretty upset about "Firefly" ...
Why doesn’t he give the $40 million a year to Colbert ?
Letterman, funny or not, gives off major sleaze vibes. I would not leave him alone with my dog.
Sure does.
“David Letterman unleashes fury at CBS for canceling his successor Stephen Colbert”
did he tear himself in two in a fit of rage like Rumpelstiltskin?
And Letterman will die soon and can’t take one penny from that $400 million with him.

His frustration pleases me.
Gutless? What was gutless wasn’t cancelling him immediately and buying him out.
His show is losing significant amounts of money for the network year after year. What would have been brave out keeping such a show on the air? They were stupid to hire him to begin with, and even more stupid to keep him around this long. He destroyed the show. An actual comedian, if they still exist, may have kept the show afloat.
keep in mind that NBC/CBS/ABC use PUBLIC airewaves yet these leftists think they are entitled to use them for their commie propaganda every single night.
Multiple people have said this before, but they would probably make a lot more money just airing old sitcoms in the timeslots of these shows. I bet airing old re-runs of The Price is Right with Bob Barker at 11:30 would draw ratings just as good - and of course zero production costs so all ads would be profit. And quite frankly, I would be more inclined to tune in instead of passing over with even considering watching it when I see these current shows on the channel guide.
David Letterman was about as funny as an empty CARE package on Christmas morning. This guy has an ego about a mountain high and a sense of humor as arid as the Sahara Desert. Funny, he definitely was not. Always was and always will be a very bitter person.
CNN needs to hire Colbert. He would be the final nail in their coffin.
That would be a good one too, though it is still in normal syndication and also on the MeTV network.
I watch a lot of TV on the good ol’ antenna...but it is very rare than the main broadcast stations are what I am tuned to. There are so many other networks now to watch.
HE ALSO IS PART OWNER OF AN INDY CAR RACING TEAM
