Apple has rolled out its first public betas for iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS 26, watchOS 26, and tvOS 26, inviting users to experience the forthcoming features ahead of the official release. With a notable shift in branding, Apple has opted for a year-based numbering system to align its software versions with the calendar year, trading in the previous chronological format. As a result, the latest updates will be labeled accordingly, reflecting their primary visibility in 2026.

One of the standout features across Apple’s platforms is a significant cosmetic overhaul dubbed Liquid Glass. This redesign aims to create a cohesive and visually appealing interface, enhancing the overall user experience. iOS 26 introduces a range of new functionalities in the Messages app, including personalized backgrounds and interactive polls. Furthermore, Live Translation has been integrated, facilitating smoother communication not only in Messages but also during FaceTime calls and phone conversations. A notable improvement in Visual Intelligence allows users to interact with on-screen content more intuitively. Additionally, the Phone app features innovative screening tools to help users assess the value of their incoming conversations. One of the intriguing additions is Hold Assist, a feature designed to listen to hold music, sparing users from the wait.

iPadOS 26 brings perhaps the most substantial update for Apple’s tablet, transforming it into a more powerful productivity tool. The operating system now includes desktop-like window management, enhancing multitasking capabilities. Users will find Menu Bar dropdown entries along with the introduction of essential applications like Preview and Exposé, both well-known to Mac users. This update addresses previous complaints regarding the iPad Pro’s inability to fully serve as a productivity device.

Mac users can expect enhancements with macOS Tahoe 26, which retains the traditional naming convention while adopting the new numerical format. This update integrates the Phone app and Live Activities features from the iPhone, alongside an upgraded Spotlight that allows users to perform actions directly from the launcher.

On the fitness front, watchOS 26 introduces Workout Buddy, an AI-driven virtual fitness coach that personalizes insights based on individual fitness histories. This feature provides users with real-time feedback through a text-to-speech model, encouraging them with motivational messages during their workouts.

As with any public beta, those interested in testing the new software should proceed with caution. While these public betas are less risky than developer versions, they are pre-release software that can still exhibit bugs and impact battery performance. It is advisable for users to back up their devices before embarking on this testing journey.

20 years ago, I looked forward to new, innovative features.

Now all the new features do is clutter up the interface with useless junk I will never use and make it a lot harder to use the devices as simple appliances.

Will “featuritis” ever end?

half of the new “features” are never used, only for marketing purposes. We’re waiting on significant tech improvements, not just new swipe features.
