H. P. Lovecraft was many things: a recluse, a virulently xenophobic racist, and arguably the most influential figure in modern horror fiction.

One of my favorite authors.

You can also tell his influence on the early writings of Robert E. Howard.

All good stuff.

Pretty much agree, though I found Lovecraft too nihilistic for me. I never enjoyed his work. I too found the recommended HS English readings tedious and dreary. To me it wasn’t even what I would call great literature to much society and self flagelation. It inspired me to nothing!

I read Rise and Fall Of The Third Reich over forty years ago, with a dictionary by my side; don’t remember a word of it.

I read the same book and remember it well. I often quote it to drive the nasty natzys over on GAB into fits.

I’m a huge fan of Lovecraft, and my daughters are as well.

His writing is terrible.

The stuff HPL was publishing in the 30s was actually pretty typical of pulp SF of the time. (Dire.)

One wonders what he would have written like if he lived long enough to write for Unknown Worlds.

He was unusually prophetic:

".. published his first poem, "Providence in 2000 A.D.," in the Providence Evening Journal in 1912. The poem is a satire that describes a future where the white descendants of English heritages have been pushed out by waves of immigrants, who begin to rename everything along their own cultural leanings."

For any Lovecraft fans out there, you know how hard it is find a good movie that can mimic HP's writing style. But here's a few I've come across that have a cosmic horror element to them:

Older Gods. This is available on Tubi, and I highly recommend this.

The Empty Man

The Endless

When I opened up a book and started reading a story titled “The Dreams in the Witch House”, ‘Whether the dreams brought on the fever or the fever brought on the dreams Walter Gillman did not know’. It was interesting from the start.

Pickman’s Model is one of the creepiest stories I’ve read. And the Shadow Over Innsmouth when the Traveler is trying to escape from the Deep Ones at the hotel scared me when I read it. And it takes a lot to scare me.

I was a proud reader of hard SF pretty much exclusively (with an exception for Tolkien) until I discovered Lovecraft and Howard........have been more of a fantasy fan ever since.

Here, you might find these fun.

This first one is a ten-minute clip of a way-out Christian who came out of Satanism and witchcraft and a bunch of other stuff. He talks about science fiction and references Clark, Asimov, and Heinlein, Jack Parsons, Aleister Crowley, etc.

“The Sons of God and the Antichrist by Bill Schnoebelen “

And then there is this one:

“Vampires & Werewolves - Real or Fake - Bill Schnoebelen - The Prophecy Club

From about 2000 or so. The guy’s still around on YT

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ogr8hDVUoAg

“Bill Schnoebelen was a Voodoo Priest, Wiccan High Priest, 2nd degree member of the Church of Satan, New Age guru, occultist, channeler, 90th degree Mason, Knight Templar, Vampire initiate, and a member of the Illuminati. Due to the increase of media exposure of Vampires and Werewolves made to appear seductive, many people are becoming intrigued with evil. What is wrong needs to be exposed.

TOPICS: Are Vampires and Werewolves Real? What’s Wrong with Vampires and Werewolves? How Did Bill Get out of Satanism? What Does the Bible Say about This? Dangers for Children and Christians? What Role-Models Are Created?”

Enjoy. N.
