Ukraine Will Get U.S. Weapons in a New Way. Here’s What We Know.

NATO allies will buy arms, then give them to Ukraine, President Trump said.

SNIP

Mr. Rutte said that at least eight NATO countries were ready to pay for the arms and praised Mr. Trump for helping Ukraine obtain “what it needs.”

“But you do want Europeans to pay for it, which is totally logical,” Mr. Rutte said.

President Trump said on Tuesday that the United States was not considering sending long-range missiles to Ukraine and that he did not think Ukraine should target Moscow, the Russian capital.

SNIP

More Ukrainians were killed in June than in any other single month so far in the three-year war, the United Nations reported. Russian forces continue to advance in eastern Ukraine.

SNIP

Germany has offered to buy two systems and Norway a third. The United States has far more Patriot batteries than any other military — more than 60 of the estimated 180 worldwide, according to weapons trackers at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. But it is not clear which countries are selling theirs.

SNIP

Mr. Trump did not commit to selling the United States’ supply of Patriots to Ukraine, and it is possible some arms will come from governments outside NATO’s 32-country alliance. Those countries would then be given priority to buy American-made replacements. That has already been happening throughout the war.

Thank you very much and God bless you.

I wonder how much of the weapons Trump sells to NATO will actually be passed on to Ukraine.

Trump told NATO to put on their big boy pants and defend itself. Suddenly NATO is scrambling to pull together an equipped military after years of neglect. Germany plans to buy some of the Patriot systems for itself, and give its old systems to Ukraine. I think there will be a combination of skimming off the top and trading out old equipment. Germany, and likely others in NATO know the Ukraine can't win, so they aren't going to send the most advanced weapons to Ukraine for destruction.

Patriot systems are defensive. Ammo isn’t useful as offensive weaponry for the Ukrainians as there are regions of the front lines unmanned. There aren’t enough men left to plan offensive actions and Ukraine is now defending less and less.

In the past, I’d read that the US (Biden) gave Ukraine missiles that could reach Moscow (long range missiles - HIMARS etc.) only to read later that the US purchased Soviet era launchers for Ukraine, so the missiles had less than half their original range.

It’s always been like that - they get F-16s, but you find out that NATO gave them old rebuilt F-16 and kept the new ones, oh and there aren’t runways the F-16s can use near enough to the front lines to be useful, and at the same time safe from Russian attack. Oh and they don’t have pilots, but they are training them. Oh but the pilots are new to flying, and there aren’t enough training slots for them etc.

The United States has far more Patriot batteries than any other military — more than 60 of the estimated 180 worldwide, according to weapons trackers at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.

The article says Ukraine has six working batteries, with two under repair.

How many in total have they received?

FWIW, I don't believe Ukraine has that many batteries left as Russia destroyed some, often shortly after they arrived. The information was kept close to the vest (NATO) because it looks bad to ask for more 'too soon'. But it makes sense in that Russia has far more war fighting aircraft of more modern design and more experienced pilots.

From a Ukrainian website:

https://global.espreso.tv/russia-ukraine-war-how-many-air-defense-systems-do-us-and-europe-owe-ukraine-serhiy-zgurets-column

Between 2022 and 2024, Ukraine received 24 full air defense batteries from Europe and the U.S. However, 18 promised batteries remain undelivered, including 10 from the U.S. — 2 Patriot systems and 8 NASAMS

In June, Ukraine received Russia-launched 5,000 Shahed-type drones
(includes smaller Gerbera and Parodiya types). The highest number in one night was 728.

This is far too many to handle for systems like US Patriot
air defense missiles Trump promised to supply Ukraine.

The US total production capacity is only around 650 Patriot missiles per year. These
missiles cost $3.3 million tax dollars each – roughly 100 times as much as a Shahed.

I have to wonder if this round-about supply line includes USA loans to NATO to purchase there weapon systems.

Of course NATO will repay the loans, with interest. /S

There is no Soviet era launchers that can launch Himars rockets. A Himars launcher can fire Standard Rockets (GMLRS)(Range of 50 miles) or ATACMS(Range of 186 miles). Neither can reach Moscow.

So no, Biden didn't give Ukraine rockets that could reach Moscow.

includes USA loans to NATO

NATO is not using general funds for Ukraine weapons purchase. European nations(NATO members) will purchase weapons from the US to either send to Ukraine or replace what is being sent to Ukraine.

There are NO US loans to NATO for weapons purchase.

Ukraine doesn't use the US Patriot system to intercept Shahed drones, but to intercept Russian ballistic missiles.

Ukraine has other systems against Shahed drones: Flakpanzer Gephards, ZSU-23-4 Shilka, MIM-23 Hawk, etc

“I wonder how much of the weapons Trump sells to NATO will actually be passed on to Ukraine.”

I wonder if there are any weapons left to sell to NATO as production of new weapons is NEXT TO NOTHING compared to their consumption in Ukraine.
