A mother’s chili secret has gone viral in a TikTok video that has some loving the added ingredient while others are in disbelief.
The video was posted by the Hnieno Fam, a family-oriented TikTok account centered on a London mother and a father of two.
Jade Hnieno, the mom of the family, shared the video last month, revealing the mysterious addition: a square of dark chocolate added directly to the pot. “Secret ingredient to make the best chili,” she captioned the video.

I like my chocolate and chili in a bottle!
DeKuypers Crave chocolate chili liqueur is pretty good!!
If you’re tasting it, it’s too much.
Never been to the UK but I’ve heard plenty about the food.
How can they be so close to Italy and France and not have their cullenary history rub off?....heck, Germany even.
I think adding chocolate to chili gives it a burned sort of flavor. Not a fan.
I use brown sugar. Never thought of chocolate. Good idea.
I’m a huge chili fan and have long known this, but thank the lord she didn’t say cinnamon, even a slight taste of it in chili completely ruins it. (for me at least)
Skyline style or Cincinnati chili uses it as flavoring and I can’t eat it.
I like to add a smidgen of Joe’s Uncle Bosie
As long as Eric Cartman isn’t adding secret ingredients to the chili, its all good…
LOL. That's a good excuse -- yum!
...dark chocolate is an old and not unusual addition to chili as many have noted...
I like my chili recipe so much I'd be afraid to try it, but someday I may give it a swing. I guess a square or two can't really hurt.
Did you make it to the second paragraph? LOL
I bought some kind of mole chocolate enchilada thing from Costo because it was drastically marked down.
OMG, it was awful and bitter. And I had bought 3 boxes of them.
I wasnt about to throw them away so I scrapped of what I could and then tried doctoring them.
If Mole Chili is bitter I want no part of it.
I always put a good spoonful of unsweetened cocoa in my chili. I never thought it was a big deal though.
“Cincinnati-style chili includes cocoa powder.”
Cocoa, coffee, and cinnamon regularly make appearance in West Texas chili.
Indeed, I’ve never made it without a cup of coffee.
I threw in a can of Ro-tel tomatoes and it isn’t too bad for ‘single guy being lazy, food’, you wouldn’t want to do it a second time though.
No, no, no, no, the Blue what ever Cincinnati chili totally bites gopher balls.
Yeah, mole sauce.
Made it once, not a fan of it.
Cincinnati knows this.
From all the clickbait headlines out there, it seems people are easily "stunned" or "shocked" or "speechless" these days. Next thing they'll be fainting or going into convulsions over someone dropping a square of chocolate in their chili. Sheesh.

People didn’t know that? Chocolate is a “secret ingredient” in a lot of stuff with tomatoes, cuts the acid. And in hot stuff for the earthy base. I knew that before I knew how to cook.
