Societies without alcohol often failed to grow because the increased population density contaminated the water supply, increasing sickness from polluted water. By drinking beer instead, organisms in the drinking water were killed, which allowed more people to live in a smaller space. Instead of a frontiersman life where they had to do all things themselves, population growth allowed specialization and shops that specialized (bakeries, blacksmiths, food vendors, etc.) in specific markets resulted in scale economies and rising incomes.

The study likely does not distinguish between cause and effect; ignoring the possibility of other attributes of higher levels of political organization, of which alcohol may have been a social attribute but not the cause of higher political organization.
They think they know which came first, the chicken or the egg, but they don’t know.
I have mentioned this for years when mentioning that people should look at the alcohol based Western civilization which refused Cannabis as an intoxicant, versus the areas that embraced it as an intoxicant.
Alcohol had a positive effect on society and community.

So drinking societies were the forerunner of the modern corrupt lying political party? Makes sense to me.

None of us would be here today if it weren’t for alcohol. I don’t mean that we’re all the product of drunken hookups or anything. But without the sanitizing effect of alcohol a town dies once its population grows large enough to contaminate its drinking water. There is also the fact that beer in particular was a key source of calories for many medieval peasants.
