Its parish priest, the Rev. Gabriel Romanelli of the Holy Family Church, became well known after it was revealed that Pope Francis used to call him every evening during the war in Gaza.
A man and a woman who were seriously injured in the midmorning strike died in surgery at the nearby al-Ahly Hospital, according to the hospital’s director of surgery, Mostafa Naim. The patriarchate later confirmed the death of a third person, Najwa Abu Daoud.
Naim identified two of the dead as Foomya Ayad and Saad Eissa Salama. They were Orthodox Christians but were sheltering at the church, according to Kamel Ayad, a spokesman for Gaza’s Greek Orthodox Church.
Caritas, a Catholic charity that runs mental health services at the church, said the church’s roof was hit by a shell at around 10:10 a.m. local time, scattering shrapnel across the courtyard below and severely wounding two elderly women sitting inside a Caritas tent, along with others nearby who were rushed to the hospital.
As shelling and Israeli military operations picked up in the area over the past week, Romanelli had urged people sheltering at the church to stay inside.
Francis was an early and outspoken critic of the way Israel has waged its war in Gaza, which Israel launched in retaliation for the Hamas-led attacks on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, during which Palestinian militants killed about 1,200 people — mostly civilians — and took about 250 hostages to Gaza.

All of the sudden the “Washington Post” cares about Christians.
Netanyahu will just say it was a secret Hamas weapons depot in disguise.
Nice.
My understanding is that Israel maintains a video library of each strike target being used as an offensive position by hamass so that they can avoid being accused of war crimes.
I’ll stand by to find out if that is true in this case.
.
Wut? Three died every night when he called. No one saw a connection?
More likely a stray round.
Israel tends to investigate and admit stray rounds.
War sucks. Collateral damage is unavoidable. hamass ought not to have started this one.
The war ends the day hamass surrenders and releases the hostages (a war crime).

And it took 4 to write this garbage.
There’s always a real story behind the fake one, but it doesn’t make Israel look bad so the story is changed so that it does make Israel look bad.
And the preterist salivating world eats it up.
Yes it’s the Washington Post, but some conservative religious outlets have covered it too. Why can’t you just accept that neither Trump nor Israel nor the pope nor anyone but Jesus is perfect?! I don’t understand the flipping out. It’s idolatrous!
Conservative religious outlets have covered it too. As I said in post above, I don’t understand the flipping out the moment any negative story comes out. The Israeli military is human and fallible, as is America, the Republican Party, Trump, the pope, etc…They are not going to be saints. Only Jesus was perfect.
So you’d rather this not be covered? By anyone? It’s in other less liberal publications too.
This is so sad. I was not fond of the late Pope Francis’ overall leanings, but was endeared to his commitment to calling and checking in with this church nightly. He was good about keeping in touch with churches in other parts of the Middle East as well - not just Gaza, and not just post October 7.
Very sad. My prayers are with all affected.
It is undisputed that Hamas was using at least part of the compound to shelter terrorists.
Due to Hamas persecution, the scarce population of Christians in Gaza (about 3,000 in 2007, down from something like 50,000 decades ago) is down to somewhere in the 800-1500 range.
Some of the few Christians left were, indeed, sheltering there, but Hamas loves its human shields and so also puts its people there.
What is the % chance that Hamas did it? I would not put it past them.
