Sorry Big Bird, But the Dumbest Waste of Tax Dollars Is (Finally!) About to Die
DC Journal ^ | 7/17/25 | Michael Graham

Posted on 07/17/2025 5:18:53 AM PDT by DallasBiff

Early Thursday morning, the U.S. Senate passed its version of the $9 billion rescission bill, bringing the country one step closer to ending the most egregious and indefensible federal spending in the modern era.

Public broadcasting.

The $500 million a year that taxpayers are forced to fork over for government radio and TV is such a small slice of the $7 trillion spending total, it’s more like a spending “scrape” than a cut. But what these federal funds lack in volume, they make up in stupidity.

Whatever the merits of a government-funded radio and TV network in the era of AM radios and VCRs, spending even a single dollar on broadcasting in the America of 2025 is beyond insane. There are literally more Americans who own cellphones than can receive an NPR radio signal.

I do like Antiques Roadshow.

That’s about it.

I remember it. It had as an opening children running through a meadow or field with the theme song playing. This however is followed by a set set in an urban ghetto. Talk about bait and switch.

Let’s not count the chickens before they hatch. The DC establishment may still find a way to keep the funding for these wastes of money going.

“I do like Antiques Roadshow.”

The British one is much better. The American version gets too damned woke for me.

Only PBS show I ever really enjoyed, and it went away years ago, was The New Yankee Workshop. Watched it every Saturday morning. It’s where I learned about one of my favorite hobbies.

All but three of the episodes are available on YouTube. Those three were for children’s toys that are now considered unsafe.

“I thought Sesame Street was its own thing and not funded by PBS at all? I recall reading that it makes money on its own and that PBS doesn’t even get first run showings of its episodes anymore. Which would mean it is unaffected by cuts to PBS?”

Correct

SS is owned by a non profit. HBO/Max has had first run episodes for the last 10 years, Netflix just picked it up to do the same starting next year. PBS I assume pays to get the rerun viewing rights.

Republicans are trying to defund Big Bird

BINGO. Every time the GOP tried to defund the DNC "public" networks, the left started crying that "da chillens" won't have Sesame Street to babysit them anymore. Whether the government was funding Sesame Street or not, THE FAR LEFTIES wanted you to believe it was.

Congratulations once again John Thune and the whole GOP conference. It seems nice to be routinely saying that. Way to do your job. This helps take the spotlight off the other garbage too. Executive, Lesislative and Judicial wins. Starting to be a pretty formidable tag team!

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one.

Even as a kid, I couldn’t stand Sesame Street.

I liked Perry Mason reruns a lot more as a 70s kid.

Electric Company was better, and I halfway liked it. EC pushed the limits of electronic video effects of that early equipment.

I didn’t either until a guy in my Bible study group told me he volunteered for them.

And you know what, with all the money the government flushes down the toilet on useless grants etc. it’s a damn shame the Red Cross doesn’t get any financial support from the fed gov.

Hopefull Lakshmi Singh hits the road too.

The one whom I despise is Diana Rehm. With her cracky voice, and slow manner, she wants to come across as mild, moderate, reasonable.

But, two instances:

The first was when she pretty much lost it when she had on a male guest who was promoting chastity, and no sex outside of marriage. She was vicious to her, when he wouldn't back down , and woulodn't lose his cool. She got MEAN. I thought . . . THAT's her trigger? Ugh.

The second time was when she was interviewing some scientist talking about towing icebergs to the Middle East for a fresh water supply. She had a Hank Johnson/Maxine Waters moment, asking if we might run out of fresh water if the Middle Easterners use it up? He rightly got condescending and said he would have to review 8th grade Science Class and describe the water cycle.

I have a soft spot for Terry Gross. One time, she had these British ladies from "What Not to Wear" on. They flipped the script on her, when she told them she didn[t like to wear skirts or dresses. When Terry stated she didn't like the way they made her feel, they asked her why she was afraid of her own femininity. They had her on the defensive, and of course were skilled at British cheekiness. A good radio moment/

When the topic isn't political, she's a damn good interviewer.

Terry Gross, Diana Rehm, oh brother! Don't I know it. That whole NPR hen house is a real piece of work. Glad you brought them up. Don't these people want to retire? I will sometimes put the NPR station on for music. But the minute the news comes on—*CLICK*, off goes the radio. I don't have the stomach for it anymore. Each of those voices is worse than chalk squeaking on the blackboard. One of them runs a show called "Fresh Air". It's anything but fresh air. It is stale predictable communist talking points.

NPR and PBS are among the wealthiest media outlets in America. They don’t need government funding. And frankly they shouldn’t have it. They do have commercials, slimy little statements or full ads that show up at the beginning and end of most shows. They also get loads of donations. And there are numerous license fees they charge for content.

They do not need government money. But more importantly, the fact that they have an opinion should mean that they should never get government funding. They are not and have never been nonpartisan. Cutting them off is long overdue.
