Four people dead in Florida from flesh-eating bacteria found in coastal waters

A type of flesh-eating bacteria has killed four people in Florida so far this year.

The state’s health department confirmed the deaths in a notice posted on the Florida Health website.

A total of 11 people have contracted the bacteria in 2025, according to the same source.

Vibrio vulnificus is part of a wider group of Vibrio bacteria, which are found in coastal waters, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states.

This specific bacterium, Vibrio vulnificus, typically lives in warm, brackish seawater, and can enter open wounds when people are swimming.

Another potential source of infection is raw shellfish, especially oysters, Florida Health noted.

**SNIP**

If Vibrio vulnificus enters the bloodstream, it can cause severe illness marked by fever, chills, septic shock and blistering skin lesions, according to Florida Health.

About half of these bloodstream infections are fatal.

Some severe cases can cause an infection called necrotizing fasciitis, which is when the flesh around an open wound dies, the CDC cautions. This rare side effect has led to Vibrio vulnificus being described as a “flesh-eating bacteria.”

There’s a lesson here... When you have an open wound... Close it and for gods sakes... Don’t go swimming with an open wound.

I knew some one who had a relative die from something like this. I’m not sure if it was the same bacterium or not, but it sounds similar. It was either her father or her uncle. He went fishing in the coastal marshes here in Florida (Volusia County) and apparently waded into the water and caught something lethal.

Incomplete story. Nowhere does it say where in Florida, which is a huge state. Could this be just a New York hit piece on the state that many in New York are moving to?

There is a chart on the Florida Health website. So far there have been 11 cases, and 4 deaths but that is down from the years prior.

Don’t go swimming with an open wound.

...or a fresh tattoo.

In 2024, a total of 82 cases of Vibrio vulnificus and 19 deaths were reported to Florida Health.

There were 46 cases and 11 deaths in 2023.

The deaths were in Bay, Broward, Hillsborough and St. Johns counties (Two Gulf and two Atlantic coast counties).

Nationwide, vibriosis from Vibrio vulnificus and other Vibrio bacteria causes an estimated 80,000 illnesses and 100 deaths every year, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

Interesting, no cases in Martin, St. Lucie, or Indian River, which would be affected by the draining of the big lake, every year.
It causes so many other ecological problems, I would have guessed this might be one of them.

I got that from this too. You have to be pretty dumb to go to the shore with a gapping wound.

I used to wonder if swimming and gigging and crabbing in the bays and swimming and seining in the Gulf of America was good or bad for my open wounds and never could make up my mind what effect the water was having, it didn’t seem to make any noticeable difference.

Back when America was great, we had a lot of these taken care of or we were working on it. Now, the illegal alien, Mexican flag waving invaders are dragging this crap in faster than we can do anything about it.

Scroll down and hot the tab for the chart.

Looks to me like cases are way down since last year...

Good advice... Fresh tattoo’s are essentially open wounds. One doesn’t think about that... But I’m thinking about it now. Fresh tattoo... Don’t swim.

6’ minimum for sharks (especially with an open wound). I prefer at least 20’ myself depending on far from shore I am.
