Putin, unfazed by Trump, will fight on and could take more of Ukraine
Reuters Japan Times ^ | 7/15/2025 | GUY FAULCONBRIDGE AND DARYA KORSUNSKAYA

Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to keep fighting in Ukraine until the West engages on his terms for peace, unfazed by U.S. President Donald Trump's threats of tougher sanctions, and his territorial demands may widen as Russian forces advance, three sources close to the Kremlin said.

-snip-

"Putin thinks no one has seriously engaged with him on the details of peace in Ukraine — including the Americans — so he will continue until he gets what he wants," one of the sources said on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the situation.

-snip-

a second source familiar with Kremlin thinking said that Putin considered Moscow's goals far more important than any potential economic losses from Western pressure, and he was not concerned by U.S. threats to impose tariffs on China and India for buying Russian oil.

-snip-

"Appetite comes with eating," the first source said, meaning that Putin could seek more territory unless the war was stopped. The two other sources independently confirmed the same.

-snip-

"Russia will act based on Ukraine's weakness," the third source said, adding that Moscow might halt its offensive after conquering the four eastern regions of Ukraine if it encounters stiff resistance. "But if it falls, there will be an even greater conquest of Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy and Kharkiv."

I expect Putin to not stop, until within range of bombarding Kiyv and the western side of the Dnipro River, using short-range rockets and heavy artillery. So Russia may instantly state its unhappiness with the government of Ukraine.

The war will likely continue as long as Russia can maintain a bombardment advantage.

What would be the point of Russia fighting on at all if not to take more of Ukraine territory? They couldn’t be just standing still at the front lines to bleed the Ukes to death of manpower could they? Why?

Trump acts out of fear. Not fear of Putin but fear of losing the Putin loving idiots in his base.

Putin will be dealing with his war for the rest of his life. Not my problem nor is Trump’s.

Man, I hate weasel words like “could”, “might”, “maybe”, since they are consistent with everything and prove nothing. What’s the basis for making such a statement other than serving as click bait? A “real” journalist would never use such words and would only report the observable facts and not slant their work to support some agenda. Alas, such journalists seem to have gone the way of the dodo bird.

I've said all along that Trump's options are identical to what Biden's were - the consequences of continually feeding the beast or the consequences of walking away.

Contrary to his campaign rhetoric, Trump after promising the latter, has opted for the former, which mimics Biden and the deep state. Yeah, some of the details are tweaked, but mostly the same failed strategy of sanctions and sending perpetual funds and arms to Ukraine. "Oh but Europe is doing it now." lol...nope.

Sadly there has been no articulation or vision of what victory looks like - from anyone. FReepers, Trump, neocons, Lindsey, the yellow British press.... nobody. Not a single picture painted of how this ends in a way that satisfies those advocating the MESS they've made.

Yeah Trump says he wants Vlad to "negotiate," but Vald's terms have been clear; no NATO on Russia's border in a disarmed Ukraine. This is the entire reason why we're here. Ukraine was intended as a buffer since it's creation in 1991. Five-eyes posing as Blackrock contractors won't fool anyone.

Russia simply moved its border a few ticks to the left and nobody knows how to undo it, despite NATO spending multiple times Russia's total military budget.

"Oh but look, Russia economy is bad, potatoes and eggs are high" is not a plan and will not cause Russian troops to pull back off their new borders.

That’s more Trump-hating b.s. than I’ve seen in a long time.

The guy who stood up in defiance after being shot acts out of fear?

No, the man acts out of pragmatism, even in the face of hostility and hatred.

At core, the essential problem is the west’s failure to understand how important a completely neutral Ukraine is to Russia.

The guy who stood up in defiance after being shot acts out of fear?

Everyone fears something even if it's hidden deep inside. No one is 100% free of fear. If fear is too strong a word think of it as concern. Example-- Trump was really pushing the vaccines in the early stages, showcasing them as one his achievements. As a big chunk of his base turned against vaccines (for whatever reason), he quickly backtracked and even joked about it saying maybe it wasn't a good idea to mention the vaccines any more. That was the last he mentioned them.

“What would be the point of Russia fighting on at all if not to take more of Ukraine territory?”

Russia’s current goal is the destruction of Ukraine’s military forces. Taking and giving land just provides the playing field. Ukraine’s military is famous for allowing its troops to be encircled and mauled and Russia loves that. The idea is for the other side to run out of sufficient soldiers.
This has nothing to do with the fighting ability and bravery of Ukraine’s soldiers, which is very high. Russia is mobile, Ukraine is in fixed positions. Very old situation and the outcomes are well established. Defense loses. Once the army is defeated, you take whatever land you want, if you want.

Once that is accomplished, if you want land, you just march in, put up your flags and start your governance with military occupation.
