For nearly a year, 29-year-old Yessica Arrua was living like a high-earning veterinarian despite working as a receptionist at a Florida horse clinic.
Thanks to a payroll mix-up, Arrua, who is originally from Argentina, allegedly pocketed more than $400,000 of another employee’s salary between February 2022 and January 2023, according to the Daily Mail. During this time, Arrua’s paychecks were nearly seven times her actual salary, according to a police report from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office.
The error went unnoticed until the Palm Beach Equine Clinic’s CFO discovered the issue and flagged it with their payroll provider, Harbor America. But what’s even more shocking is how long the payroll error went unnoticed — even the veterinarian who was supposed to be making $450,000 a year only noticed when her credit cards declined.
Arrua, a nine-year clinic employee who even knew the company’s president, is now at the center of a criminal investigation — and it was that same president who ultimately called the police.
(snip) Arrua allegedly noticed she was being overpaid and instead of reporting the error, she went on a luxury shopping spree.
The report details purchases at high-end retailers like Coach and Michael Kors, purchases at restaurants and furniture stores, and thousands of dollars sent through Zelle to someone listed as “Mama Dukes.” Investigators also discovered that $80,000 went toward buying a food truck for a friend of her mother’s. Arrua also admitted to sending additional funds to Argentina to help build a house.
She has since been formally charged with grand theft of $100,000 or more and money laundering of $100,000 or more — both first-degree felonies under Florida law.
According to Florida Statute 812.014, theft involving that amount can carry a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, along with steep fines.

Money goes into their checking account and bills are automatically paid.
As long as they live below their means they can build up quite a bit of excess cash.
They never look at their paycheck because they never see it.
The money is always just there.
Their accountant would have caught it at tax time.
And now it’s time for a joke.
A Scotsman opens his paycheck and finds that he’s been overpaid by 5 pounds. He says nothing. The next week he opens his paycheck and finds that he’s been underpaid by 5 pounds.
The Scotsman angrily confronts the payroll clerk about the underpayment error. “Angus,” the clerk says, “you were accidentally given 5 pounds too much last week. Why didn’t you say anything then?”
“I can overlook one mistake,” Angus replies. “But not two in a row.”
What’s MOST remarkable to me is a Veterinarian making nearly half a million dollars a year.
On the other hand, I own dogs and, after many years of paying vet bills, now take my dogs to Tractor Supply vet clinic. Same impersonal service at about a third the cost. Immunizations? only the bare minimum. Dogs are healthy and my bank account is better for the decision.
I think she was milking the boss
In Argentina, anything that isn't nailed down, behind concertina wire or inside an electric fence belongs to you...
Lol
I get the automatic bill payments, the direct deposit, all that ...
I do a lot of that, too.
I also scrutinize my bank, investment, and credit card accounts. Need to make sure that all is in order, across the board. Trust nobody ...
I would too and especially since me and animals get along really well.
I have a hard time believing “Veterinarian” was actually making $450,000 a year for being a Vet. Whole story is feeeshy.
At my most recent employer, payroll went through several layers of approval before processing.
One time somehow a whole lot of hourly people were paid twice on a payday.
Yeah. In my town a vet clinic charges $950 to spay a cat. The vet 4 blocks down the road, with a small office, charges $350 for the same procedure. The clinic vet will not even come in nights or weekends for. emergencies. We have to go 40 miles away for an emergency.
She’s almost pretty enough to be termed as Not Guilty, but she has already admitted to her crimes. The Payroll Manager needs to be fired!
Another one to lose her citizenship, coming up!
“Thought it was a bonus “
That’s the story and I’m sticking with it! 😉
For those of us who have had occasions when we paid the rent and had a whole 74 cents left, we tend to keep a closer eye on things.
Can believe it. Palm Beach County/Wellington area is the Winter home for equestrian/polo Horses... Big $$$ taking care of Horses. 🐎
I’m going with not guilty.
Been there.
Done that.
Don't ever want to be there again.
Perhaps that underlies my habit of careful scrutiny.
The money was supposed to go to the Vet’s girlfriend.
Maybe they should hire an accountant.
