Why in the world was a practically unknown candy chosen for the movie E.T. instead of M&M’s? What were they thinking? If you were like me, when you first saw E.T. at the movies, and Elliot laid a trail of Reese’s Pieces for E.T. instead of M&M’s chocolate candies, you found it odd. Sure, Reese’s pieces were pretty but Elliot was MUCH more likely to have a bag of M&M’s! Reese’s pieces were practically a brand-new product at the time. It seemed like some kind of obvious product placement. And, in the novelized version of the movie, E.T. did indeed munch on M&M’s. So, why the difference?

I'm with Reeses's Pieces.
The youngins out there will not understand the debate.
Have fun its saturday and flame away.
It was product placement.
Advertising.
I bet Mars regrets that to this day.
Short answer - M&M’s parent company didn’t want the brand to be associated with a creepy science fiction movie; Reeces jumped at the chance.
ANYTHING with Reese name - 1 - M&M’s - 0
I just had 3 of the miniature cups and it’s not even noon!!!
The McDonaldland characters were going to be H.R. Puf’n’stuf’ characters but the deal fell through.
Reese’s Pieces also featured in the first Terminator movie.
ET is allergic to peanuts.
Mars? Didn’t want to feature its product in a kids movie, directed by Steven Spielberg, about a lost extraterrestrial that likes candy? 😯
What were they thinking?!? 😧
I love Reese’s Pieces. As for M&Ms, I’ll pass. I’m not into chocolate, so they have never appealed to me. I do love almond M&Ms though.
“”M&M’s - 0””
Only if it’s boxes of chocolates from Ethel M in Las Vegas:
I’m a choco-holic and the best are in the link above and listed here:
See’s - CA
Esther Price - Dayton, OH - I ate a 10# box of these chocolates given to us for Christmas in 1973 and I ate it all before my daughter was born 2 days after Christmas...
Frangos - Chicago
I tried See’s a while back on a Freeper’s recommendation. It really is superior.
M & M’s refused to be featured. They were afraid some sort of stigma would be attached to their product. Honest answer.
Uh....there’s a problem with that theory....
My macaw votes for Reeces’ Pieces.
Thank you for being on the right side of the debate.
‘I’m with Reeses’s Pieces’
So am I. Reese’s Pieces are my favorite candy.
Yeah, I remember that now that you mention it.
