At 66 years old, one Sherman Oaks, California-based mom thought she'd be enjoying an empty nest with her husband. Instead, she's sharing her home with an unexpected roommate: her 27-year-old daughter.
Since their 27-year-old moved back home in early 2024, the mother, who asked to remain anonymous to protect her daughter's identity, says she and her husband are spending close to $5,000 a month covering all of her daughter's living expenses. This includes up to $1,500 on food, $700 on transportation and $400 on her pet cat, the mother says.

Charge the little entitled twerp rent!
Supposedly one of Johnny Carson’s wives claimed $12,000 a month expenses for her cat during their divorce.
The only thing we boomers did is spoil your worthless little asses to the point you never grew up and became adults. Staying on your parent’s health insurance until you’re 26, and asking others to pay off your college loans is so emblematic of the millenials.
This boomer like many others worked his way through college, paid off what college loans he did incur within 3 years of graduation and was never without a paying job. Some of them were dirty, nasty jobs that had nothing to do with my degree, but the Carter years were tough. But I always found some legal way to pay my own way.
You clowns need to stop blaming everything on your parents, grow up and take responsibility for your own life.
Just more evidence that rich folk like you need to give all your $$ to the State so this poor child can have a normal life. :)
Thank you. We’re missing so many of our kitties. Have two remaining and won’t get more.
“I have a very faithful kitty that I probably don’t spend $400 a YEAR on.”
Your comment made me reread the story because I thought no way was she spending $400 a month on a cat. But yup.
The parents did a very bad job of parenting this useless woman.
1500 on food??? A month? for 1 person? $400 for a cat? Sorry that cat is gone.. $700 on transportation? What sort of transportation? I
$600 a month for their daughter for health insurance? There daughter is 27 years old.. she’s aged out of being covered on your insurance coverage, which means mom and dad are paying the full coverage of this daughter.
Now, I know life doesn’t go as planned, everyone can fall down, but what the every loving crazy is going on here?
My entire monthly bills, scraped to their minimum isn’t $5000 a month, and that’s for a family of 4. I know other places can be more expensive to live, but what the hell are they spending 5k a month on? that’s 60k a year, and there is no mortgage or rent being paid for her... etc.. This is insanity.
You are LIVING with me and still need 5k a month additional?
THANK YOU for that post.
Signed,
Fellow Boomer
Cat food is very expensive now. Tuna fish is cheaper.
I got 4 cats, and they cost me $200-$250 a month for dry food, wet food, and cat litter.
Or what degree she has?
That’s what I spend on a family of 4
Nothing will burn through cash faster than a drug problem.
I could see $100 a month for the cat in California or New York. And $300 for one person’s food, basic diet . $600 for insurance !
No good reason supporting the 27 year old should cost $5000.
She should get a job and not cost her parents anything since the home is free to her.
Maybe it’s a cultural thing, but in every generation of my family, the door was always open to kids to stay home or move back home, no matter what age.
We paid our own college tuition, bought our own cars, and so on. But we were welcome to live at home while building a nest egg. The same for my own kids.
If these parents pay $5,000/month for their daughter, they must be paying for everything.
"Many of her clients forgo vacations because they don’t trust their kids to stay home alone, Muench says. The father from Sherman Oaks says that retirement wouldn’t just mean a loss of income, it would also mean losing access to his employer-sponsored health insurance — which currently costs the couple close to $600 a month for their daughter.
“At this point, I was hoping to do a lot more travelling … we’ve really put that on the back burner,” the mother says. “I thought my husband and I would have the house to ourselves with the dogs, and we wouldn’t be worried sick about her all the time.”
They may spend this amount but I am very doubtful they need to.
Sounds like an infomercial for Kim Muench.
Too many fake stories out there.
Next door ad today:
Hey, I wanted to share this story about my neighbor.
So I was cleaning out my gutters one day (I know, we all hate it) when my neighbor, a retired veteran, came over. While I was up on the ladder, he asked me why I would risk my safety when I could install a new “3-in-1 gutter system” and forget about cleaning out my gutters forever. I had never heard of it, but it sounded great! He told me it: blah, blah, blah.
“Is she hot?”
She is fake. Mom is fake. Dad is fake. Story is a clickbait infomercial for Kim Muench.
