At 66 years old, one Sherman Oaks, California-based mom thought she'd be enjoying an empty nest with her husband. Instead, she's sharing her home with an unexpected roommate: her 27-year-old daughter.
Since their 27-year-old moved back home in early 2024, the mother, who asked to remain anonymous to protect her daughter's identity, says she and her husband are spending close to $5,000 a month covering all of her daughter's living expenses. This includes up to $1,500 on food, $700 on transportation and $400 on her pet cat, the mother says.

Well, I sure don’t feel sorry for them. They’re nuts
I’ve had two dogs and three cats before and never spent $400/month on them. Probably about that per year. And why is she spending that much on food? Can’t she eat at home with mom and dad? I’m guessing she’s eating out with her friends every night on her parent’s dime. Probably a late life only child. We’ve got some of those I our family and they are as a group spoiled and manipulative when it comes to their parents. And their parents are easy and willing targets.
I knew a guy whose exwife and kid dined out pretty much all the time and almost never made anything at home. His alimony paid for it.
Even if money weren’t the object, it would get old. For doubly so since I am extremely picky about dining out.
Daughter must have a hell of a drug problem.
Lady, whose fault is it that the ADULT child is a loser?
OKAY on the kitty kat.
Kitty has done nothing wrong.
Deserves protection and good care.
Kiddo at age 28 needs to get off her butt and go support herself
And she’s eating enough for five people, needs to go on a diet before she winds up in emergency
Parents are fools (and frankly very poor at parenting) to put up with this kind of nonsense. give her 30 days notice to make proper arrangements and then toss her out
I smell fake news.
Instead of buying a cup of coffee at Starbucks for 6 bucks try the Mobil station for 1 Dollar. Common sense.
Maybe she charges them $3,000 a month for the privilege of her living with them.
Thanks for that comment.
Whiny children.
Thyroid iodine treatment for a cat costs over $2K. Don’t ask me how I know. 😲
Wow
Oh my. I hope the little one is doing well!
That was in 2022. After the treatment, she was perfect, and it bought her three years. We lost her about six weeks ago with cancer. 😢
Oh dear. I’m so sorry.
We have a kitty that had an unfortunate habit of swallowing small plastic pieces. First was the rubber tip of a chair, second was a Lego piece. In both cases he would have died without surgery. Wife and children begged me to pay for the second surgery, and tears melted me. I spent $7,000 total, taking out a 10% loan. athat was five years ago. Even with that EXTRAORDINARY expense, has not cost $400 a month even factoring in the surgeries. Just cat food and litter.
I call BS or the parents are idiots!
DoorDash.
It is amazing how much money people spend using that thing.
As for the cat probably on some expensive and totally unnecessary medication. Probably because the cat has "anxiety" or some such.
$5000/month with no rent or mortgage. That’s not easy to do. She is used to the good life, daddy’s a radiologist afterall, and doesn’t feel her lack of employment should hinder that. That is the epitome of entitlement mentality.
The cat can keep the mice out of your place.
