At 66 years old, one Sherman Oaks, California-based mom thought she'd be enjoying an empty nest with her husband. Instead, she's sharing her home with an unexpected roommate: her 27-year-old daughter.
Since their 27-year-old moved back home in early 2024, the mother, who asked to remain anonymous to protect her daughter's identity, says she and her husband are spending close to $5,000 a month covering all of her daughter's living expenses. This includes up to $1,500 on food, $700 on transportation and $400 on her pet cat, the mother says.

I lived at home when I was single.
I had a full time job, helped with the chores, did my own laundry, traveled, and was pretty active in church, so wasn’t a couch potato when I was at home.
And I paid room and bard to the tune of 25% of my take home pay. My parents tried to take 25% of my first tax refund, and I said they told me it was 25% of my TAKE HOME pay. They chuckled and agreed. They did say that, so the tax refund was mine.
They taught me well when it came to money, but having so little of it growing up, you learn to value what you earn and have and are not so susceptible to every scam looking for donations to their *cause*.

I have a female friend who has a hell beast dog(chiuaua) mix, who she lets pee and sh!t in the house and feeds her gourmet human food.
The hell beast barks incessantly and I don't visit any more.
In a more traditional era, she would have been expected to marry so some ambitious young man could pay that $5K a month to support his princess.
But with since our educational-entertainment culture has convinced so many womyn that marriage is beneath them, this is the result. It will ultimately destroy the American way of life.
Before anyone starts screaming misogyny at me, wife and I raised three daughters (and a son), two doctors, one NASA engineer. Never a thought of anyone moving back home.
If anything, the daughter should be taking care of the parents.

Once you let them back in you can’t just kick them out anymore.
The courts will say “this is her home too now”. You can probably get away with not paying for her food, clothing, cell phone, car, insurance etc.
These people should not complain because they are the ones who decided to give her a free ride.

That sounds like the major issue here. It sounds like the daughter is contributing nothing towards her own maintenance.
I certainly saw no mention of her working in the article, though I must admit that I really couldn't read the whole thing out of disgust. Not because she was living at home, but rather because she seems to be contributing nothing whatsoever.
But at the same time the parents are not demanding that she contribute, so they are not blameless either.

Lol. My son moved back with us for a couple of years. He paid me utilities and nominal rent because he’s not a deadbeat. Mowed the lawns, etc. What shyt parents this chick has. I don’t feel one bit sorry.

“No” helps us create boundaries for ourselves, so that others don’t exploit us.
Boundaries are for ourselves and cannot be instilled in other adults.
Sounds like $600 of that money is for the girl’s medical insurance. They’ve put her on her dad’s insurance, which is one of the reasons he can’t retire.
I’m familiar with Sherman Oaks. Rents are probably about $2,500 a month for a one-bedroom. So I feel sorry for young people trying to make it. But it sounds like the daughter has no job, and she could get a roommate. Does she feel the least bit guilty that her parents are spending all that money on her and delaying their retirement? She must not have been raised very well.
What stood out to me in the article is that these parents don’t trust their adult children to stay home alone! Say what? When I was 19 I had my own apartment, paid all my bills, and managed not to burn the building down or have wild parties or whatever it is these parents think their kids are going to do if they’re home alone. So 27-year-olds can’t be expected to act like adults now? Ridiculous.
