Tesla’s stock falls as the Musk-Trump cease-fire is broken. What happened in Round 1.

President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk resumed their war of words, and the electric-vehicle maker’s stock slumped in premarket trading Tuesday.

Tesla’s stock

TSLA

-4.52% dropped 6% ahead of the opening bell.

Musk, who also is CEO of SpaceX and owns the social-media platform X, heavily criticized the One Big Beautiful Bill Act working its way through the U.S. Senate, and the president retaliated by threatening to remove subsidies for Musk’s companies and cancel government contracts for Tesla and SpaceX. As Musk’s only listed organization, Tesla is once again vulnerable to the brickbats and threats of a high-profile political spat played out online.

Funny thing. That’s not how it scores on current level nor does that projection factor in growth above 1% (3-4% growth expected).
People that cherry pick and lie to destroy the American economy by sabotaging the only viable plan that avoids a 68% tax hike are the enemy. If Musk wants to wear that label it’s his choice though it’s a shame.

From the White House:
So-called “forecasts” (including by the CBO) predicting higher deficits are based on a false assumption that President Trump’s 2017 tax cuts will expire. In reality, extending the CURRENT tax rates — which this legislation does — has zero impact on the deficit.
If you cite the CBO’s faulty score, you must also cite CBO’s forecast that President Trump’s tariffs will cut the deficit by $2.8 trillion over the next decade. In other words, even the partisan CBO admits the deficit will be slashed by at least $500 billion over the next ten years.
Of course, the $1.7 trillion savings is partly offset by one-time spending on border security and additional tax cuts (NO TAX ON TIPS, NO TAX ON OVERTIME) — which brings the net deficit reduction to exactly $1.407 trillion.
Upon enactment the bill — and through increased tariffs revenues, discretionary spending cuts, and reversing Biden-era regulations — the Trump Administration will have taken actions that reduce deficits by at least $6.6 trillion over the next decade.

Elon needs to run his businesses or run for office.

I doubt Elon will run for office, he wants to be a king maker and have UNDUE influence. He's out of his league. Seriously, he was telling Trump who to appoint to government leadership positions - just not right.

"Musk just needs to exit the political stage and stick to being a billionaire genius.""

Thank you. My thoughts exactly.

“There hasn’t been a word from him about Congress funding Medicaid for illegals.”

One would think that was an important issue to get angry about.

People aren’t lovin’ that.

It is revolting how people ignore the possible to spout out a wishlist of items which are not part of the possible in reconciliation. The BBB is a reconciliation bill as such it requires only 50 votes. Everything that can be done in this bill should be.

Things that can’t be addressed here should be planned later down the road like the 2026 budget coming in early fall. Many of the changes being touted can be passed then and planning is already in hand.

I fault Musk and those who support his tantrums for not understanding that to accomplish anything you need to work with the possible, the existing system, the people, the corruption and self serving that is humanity, no exception for Government & Congress. Success is achieved in stages and by looking outside the box for solutions that will work, not by designing a new system with new people. POTUS is amazing at finding unconsidered paths to help America succeed.

POTUS is setting America up for a stronger economy, manufacturing base, military/defense and less drain from illegals & corruption. As the current situation is unwound there will be more ability to right size spending. Any fool can say what is right and necessary but it takes a wise, resolute, and doughty man to make it happen.

Elon was always about what furthered his interests, period.

No surprise...most people are about the same thing as Elon, some just hide it better.

Well go on being revolted because it is my understanding that cutting Medicaid to illegals is indeed possible within the scope of a reconciliation bill, if not directly within the President's executive powers.

I think you miss my point. I did not specify cutting Medicaid to illegals. I am as angry as anyone that the parliamentarian shot this down. My understanding is that the Senate tried several ways. After this bill is done I intend to continue pushing for a new, Republican nominated, parliamentarian because there is a chance for a second reconciliation bill in the fall.
My point is the clamor over nonmandatory spending which cannot be addressed in this bill. The cries that nothing should be in this bill if we are not balancing the budget or reducing the deficit are so much unhelpful talking to hear oneself talk.
#1 the bill has the largest spending cuts in a decade. Not enough but a good beginning. More will be cut in the 2026 budget.
#2 it’s not a budget bill. I am as disgusted as the next person at the glacial pace and the slow confirmation of appointees, doge cuts & codification of executive orders. However the present system is accustomed to accomplishing nothing. It needs to get revered up to speed & this is the first step.

https://www.cnbc.com/2025/07/01/tesla-shares-tumble-after-trump-says-doge-should-look-at-elon-musks-subsidies.html

President Trump writes:

“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far, and without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa. No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE. Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!””

Really? So you are willing to crapcan a relationship with the world’s most advanced space launch provider for classified and other missions? There is NO COMPANY that can get as much into space as quickly as they do besides SpaceX.

Good grief. Drop the attitude, President Trump. Elon, you and President Trump need to figure out how to disagree AND work together.

The Trump administration is threatening to halt federal Medicaid funding to states it says are illegally using the safety-net insurance program to cover health care for undocumented immigrants.

Under federal law, states are only allowed to use federal Medicaid funds for emergency medical services for people in the country illegally. But “some states have pushed the boundaries,” the CMS said in a press release on May 27 announcing that regulators would ramp up oversight in the area.

That includes heightened evaluations of states’ quarterly Medicaid spending reports, reviewing states’ financial management systems and looking for ways to close loopholes in existing Medicaid eligibility rules, the CMS said.

The agency also urged states to update their internal controls, eligibility systems and cost allocation policies to ensure Medicaid funds are being used for citizens only.

“Any improper spending on noncitizens will be subject to recoupment of the federal share,” the CMS said.

The announcement from the Trump administration is a warning shot across the bow for a handful of states that have used Medicaid funds to care for undocumented immigrants.

I think Elon is a loose cannon and has destroyed the relationship one handedly.
Trump has fired back occasionally after the first few attacks but was content to let it die out. In the last couple days Musk is back with very unhelpful, broadsides. He is 100% out of line. Opinions are free but Elon is destroying his brand and fomenting chaos. Sad to see a potential force for good, one that has accomplished much for America already be squandered in ill-considered attacks.

It isn't sustainable, and Trump knows that also. But Trump's plan is to build up the economy to reconstitute the middle-class, and become the wealth generation it once was, but no longer is.

In that way, he can also get cuts instituted into government spending, as well as, paying down the massive debt in a much better timeframe, while also eliminating deficit spending.

Elon Musk is looking at the government as being like a business, while Trump knows that the government cannot be run like a business, for a business only cares about the bottom line, while a government also has a responsibility to the citizens as well. he last part that has been abandoned somewhere along the way by our government.

In other words, he is reclaiming this nation for her citizens, which would never even be contemplated by Elon.

While everyone should put their concerns first, Elon, as the world's most richest inhabitant, has no concerns financially, except perhaps to take complete control for his own selfish desires.

Thune had the option to overrule her.

The character of your post to me sounded like it presumed such was my position, to which I object.

Beyond the one they "missed." Neither Thune nor Trump took strenuous objection.

Knew that, but this isn't 1980 anymore. At that time, our debt was 31% of GDP. Now it's nearly four times that. More importantly to my mind is that it is in the teeth of AI chewing up middle class jobs. That makes Trump's plan a huge gamble. Note: IMO he doesn't have much choice about that.
