Boulder terror attack: Colorado woman, 82, injured by Molotov cocktail dies, charges upgraded

Colorado prosecutors on Monday upgraded the charges against the alleged Boulder terror suspect following the death of an 82-year-old woman who was injured by Molotov cocktails in the June 1 attack.

The woman was identified in court documents as Karen Diamond. The Boulder County District Attorney's Office said she "died tragically as a result of the severe injuries that she suffered in the attack."

"I am devastated to hear of Karen Diamond’s passing," Colorado Gov. Jared Polis said in a statement on Monday. "This loss is deeply felt by the Boulder community and our entire state, particularly within our strong Jewish community. My heartfelt condolences go out to her friends and family. Karen was taken from us too soon, and we mourn her loss while remembering her life and the impact she had on those who loved her."

Mohamed Sabry Soliman — a 45-year-old illegal immigrant from Egypt — was indicted last week on 12 federal hate crime counts in the June 1 attack in downtown Boulder. He is accused of trying to kill the eight people who were hurt when he threw Molotov cocktails — bottles filled with flammable liquid that are ignited — as well as other people nearby.

Soliman’s attorney, David Kraut, entered the not guilty plea on Soliman’s behalf during a hearing Friday. Soliman was being represented by public defenders who do not comment on their cases to news media.

Investigators say Soliman told them he intended to kill the roughly 20 participants at the weekly demonstration on Boulder’s Pearl Street pedestrian mall calling for the release of the remaining Israeli hostages taken by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7, 2023. He allegedly threw just two of his over two dozen Molotov cocktails while yelling, "Free Palestine."

What happened to his family? Last I read, Trump ordered the entire family deported back to Egypt, but then a federal judge blocked the order.

Family still in the U.S.?

God bless the soul of poor Mrs. Diamond.

The wheels of justice grind two slow, and out of alignment.

Mohamad needs his neck stretched.

The press always uses “Egyptian” or “Jordanian” to cover up that a criminalvor terrorist perp considers himself Palestinian.

I wonder if that’s the case here.

why do we let murderers off easier because they fail? attempted murder should always carry the same penalty as murder.

incompetence should not be rewarded.

Was the person who died the Holocaust survivor? Imagine getting past the Nazis only to be put down by an Islamo-nazi.

https://www.coloradoan.com/story/news/2017/01/04/boulder-officials-vote-become-sanctuary-city/96151106/

Like many Jews of my generation, I grew up wondering what I would have done had I been part of the privileged group in Nazi Germany. Would I hide my neighbors? Would I lie to the Gestapo to protect my friends? Would I take advantage of my privilege for my own self-interest?

Thus, it’s not surprising that I was drawn to a concept introduced to me by one of my very favorite professors, the late Gary Stahl of the CU philosophy department. The concept is “moral luck”: the good fortune of not having to face situations in which doing the moral thing may be personally dangerous. My moral luck began running out in January of 2016, when the Trump administration used its authority to persecute, among others, immigrants, people of color, Muslims and members of the LGBTQ+ community. I was granted a temporary reprieve during the Biden administration, but my moral luck has been virtually hemorrhaging since Trump’s return to office.

Although there are many reasons for Boulder to maintain its status as a sanctuary, such a course of action would likely have repercussions. On a practical level, one might argue that those of us whose identities place us lower on the regime’s target list might be giving up some of our current privilege by protecting our neighbors. However, staying on the sidelines would likely only delay our inevitable rise on the hit list. On a more personal level, very few of those of us who seem to be safe right now do not have some involvement with members of the currently targeted groups. We depend on and, in many cases, love our friends, relatives, colleagues and workers who may not have the “appropriate” documents or gender identities or sexual orientations or skin color … Do we really want to lose these people?
