‘Cannot do business in the state of California’: Gas prices could hit $8/gallon as two refineries shut down

Two large California oil refineries are shutting down, triggering mounting concerns from state legislators, industry groups and many others.

**snip**

The Phillips 66 and Valero’s Benicia sites are set to close in 2026. Together, the shutdowns will eliminate nearly 300,000 barrels-per‑day of refining capacity — roughly 20% of the total used in the state.

Valero attributed its decision to “years of regulatory pressure (and) significant fines for air quality violations,” including an $82 million penalty levied in 2024. Phillips 66 similarly cited business challenges stemming from California’s strict environmental regulations.

"They have said that they cannot do business in the state of California," Gipson reiterated. “The regulatory agencies have imposed on the refiners of California very stringent regulation that makes it very difficult for them to remain in the state of California.”

"We have a new Wesco station a few miles from us in west Michigan, $3.24 a gallon here."

I've never heard of them, but I don't travel very far anymore.

We have winter and summer blends in Colorado. This is interesting:

“Winter blend gasoline is more expensive. It contains about 2% more energy than the summer blend, resulting in better gas mileage during the summer months. However, winter blends are cheaper to produce, leading to lower gas prices from late September through late April”

We walk to the local grocery sometimes if just after one or two things, and we walk to the Farmer’s Market because parking is a pain and it’s a 5 minute walk. Plus, you see neighbors when you walk.

Just what the doctor ordered.

All the business owners need to get together and issue a statement to the effect thusly: as of today we are shutting down all of our businesses and leaving this ignorant state. You people are on your own.

Thanks!

COSTCO in Santa Rosa was $4.439/GAL today.

We are in Arcata, CA tonight. Saw some (are you ready for this?) $5.19/GAL AND HIGHER on the way through!

Kali-fornians have no one to blame but themselves!

And, given their high gas taxes, why are so many of their roads so crappy?

“Couldn’t happen to a nicer state.”

Kalifornia’s energy incompetence also impacts Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, even though the residents of those states have no say in Kalifornia politics. Libtards vote, we suffer.

My family has the opposite problem. The nearest convenience store is 7 miles away, and out of the way for us. “On the way to town” (Wal Mart, etc.) is a convenience store 10 miles away, and a meat market (mostly bulk) 7.4 miles away. Aldi is 13 miles away and Wally World another half mile past that. The closest (smallish) “real grocery store” is 10 miles away and even more out of the way than that closest convenience store. :-(

Maybe if I had a motor scooter for good weather?

OTOH, I can walk out to our garden, part of the year. :-)
