The year 1973 was full of change and entirely groovy. The U.S. pulled out of Vietnam, Roe v. Wade shook up the courts, and gas lines stretched for blocks as the oil crisis took hold. On the flip side, bell-bottoms were in full swing, Pink Floyd dropped “The Dark Side of the Moon,” and a little horse named Secretariat ran straight into the history books. These 1973 photos represent how electric the year was.

they did a special on the automats on TV and it was pretty neat to see- sad that they went out of operations-
thanks for the l ink- I think it was the history channel that did a special show on automats- was a pretty cool show- I wish we had some around us- good food, low cost- great atmosphere-

When my six freeloading children were growing up, I had this idea of getting those old coin operated things for my home - and charging them for meals and laundry .. it never happened ..
It wouldn’t have worked anyway, due to inflation.
We kids paid part of our way doing chores. Course we gripped the whole way through, but it was good for us. Kept us fit and out of trouble. We loved on a small homestead-ish farm, so lots and lots of chores both inside house and outside with feeding animals, cleaning up after them, cutting firewood, collect8ng ages, milk, etc. Mowing, trimming, helping out in the garden etc.
Back then it was said that parents will have spent approx $25,000 per child in food, medical, clothes etc by time they were out of house. Not,sure what the $$ is today, probably $50,000 or more. It was about $1000 per year per child then. That was a rough estimate.
LOL! I would have gone but it was a bit far to drive. Besides, at the time, I didn’t own a single disco record, and still don’t!

My WW2 Daddy was my best friend.
I discovered punk rock in 1978 when my brother introduced me to the Pistols, the Ramones and Patti Smith.
Strangely, I was also a member of the KISS Army.
I was a student in London during the last of Thatcher’s time as PM. It was amazing.
Now I look at the world and, while I love what happened the other night in Iran, I fear for my daughter.
Although — I went to Publix this morning and started talking to two Zoomer cashiers — and I think I just joined their comedy metal band...
Stuff like that happens to me.
