Beloved American candy deemed 'unsafe to eat' in United Kingdom due to hidden chemicals (Jolly Rancher)

One of America's favorite candies has been shunned by authorities in the United Kingdom, who claim it is "unsafe to eat.

The U.K.'s Food Standards Agency (FSA) announced a stern advisory against Jolly Rancher candies on June 11.

The alert applies to all Jolly Rancher hard candies, as well as Jolly Rancher Misfits, Jolly Rancher Fruity 2 in 1s and Jolly Rancher Berry Gummies.

The reason, the FSA claims, is that the candies contain "Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) and Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons (MOSH)."

The agency said the hydrocarbons make the candies "unsafe to eat and not compliant with U.K. laws."

The FSA has instructed British consumers not to buy or eat the products.

"If you've eaten these products, there should be no immediate cause for concern, as food safety risk is low, but don't eat any more," the agency said.

**SNIP**

Mineral oil hydrocarbons enter food "through environmental contamination, use of lubricants for machinery, release agents, processing aids, food or feed additives and migration from food contact materials," according to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

"Mineral oil is also what you use to treat cutting boards, wooden spoons, and butcher blocks."

We have been drinking it safely for a hundred years...

Remember the Jolly Rancher apple...may have been the only flavor, at the time...bars that would turn into the most wicked point and blade as you sucked on them? Those were dangerous.

Somehow I never would have put “beloved” together with Jolly Rancher.

The objection is to their regular ingredients, not contaminating manufacturing.

“You can buy it over the counter for use as, among other things, a laxative.”

My Mother, me, a tablespoon.

I’m pretty sure “quintillion” is an exaggeration. We’re only down to “parts per trillion”. I think ... Six more orders of magnitude to go. Unless I’ve missed something.

“ Remember the Jolly Rancher apple”
During elementary school the jolly rancher bars were an everyday staple. At afternoon recess we hit the candy bar and those were a favorite. If you paid an extra .25 per week for lunch, you got your pick at the candy bar every afternoon.

I liked some of the flavors. Grape, watermelon, lemon. Never liked green apple.

Thank goodness we have Robert Kennedy Jr. defending the basic right of every American to eat the candy they enjoy.

I used to fork at Jolly Rancher back in 1999, Not a bad gig, but horrible scheduling.

I wouldn’t know when I would go back to work until 5PM the day I was AT work.

Don’t think I lasted a month. Quit there to drive a forklift warehousing beer bottles for a contractor for Coors. Hired on at Coors November 2000. This is my 25th year there.
