The new flag looks like a kindergarten project …a total joke that cost the taxpayers of Minnesota dearly. Another of Tampon Tim’s follies. Imagine the 1st Minnesota Infantry charging up Cemetery Ridge at Gettysburg under that idiotic flag.
All the redesigned flags do. They're all the same geometric shapes.
IIRC, the image of the farmer and the Indian were to symbolize Minnesota’s history and also looking towards future progress. And the two men are in the same space but doing their own thing - coexisting. Why even have an Indian on it if the idea was to “depict settlers kind of displacing the Indigenous people.”?
Sort of like the Land-O-Lakes butter package. The updated one got rid of the Indian and kept the land!
Although I do get the criticism that it had way too much going on. Might be good as a seal, but not so much as a flag. It was better than the new one though IMHO.
“On my (semi) frequent trips between Boston and NYC when I’m driving home I always drive up I-684 to I-84 and then head east through Connecticut and into Massachusetts”
Returning from Vermont on NY 27 (near I 84) I happened to stop in Brewster NY for a meal. All the signs on the restaurants are in Spanish. This is a town of 50,000 people who are probably all illegal. Danbury CT is very similar. How are English speaking kids supposed to learn if the lessons are in Spanish and there are 40 kids in each classroom? What is the education level of a 10 year old from Guatemala? The US literacy rate is falling and going bi-lingual and having to bring 15 millions illiterate children up to grade level impedes the education of citizens.
It eliminates the old state seal that had been its focal point, featuring the controversial image of a white man plowing a field and a Native American man riding away, Rep. Mike Freiberg (DFL) says.
“It was designed very deliberately to depict white farmers and settlers kind of displacing the Indigenous people,” Freiberg says, adding that the old flag looked too much like that of other states. “I just didn’t think it was an appropriate design to keep on either the flag or the seal.”
I know that is what he says, that is what I’m replying to. I think he is wrong and putting a 2020’s viewpoint on something that was created by some woman in the 1890’s.
From the net:
“It’s state seal featured a pioneer plowing a field and a Native American on horseback, symbolizing agriculture and the state’s indigenous heritage. A setting sun, a tree stump with an axe, and a wreath of pink and white lady’s slippers, the state flower, are also included. The motto “L’Étoile du Nord” (The Star of the North) and the years 1819 and 1858 mark significant historical milestones.”
For the new state seal the French words are removed. The dates are removed as they are somehow hurtful to the Indians. They did add some Indian phrase to the state seal, but some worry that will run up against some state law.
