YouTuber and US inventor Styropyro has assembled and tested a 250-watt handheld laser.

VIDEO:

According to him, the laser system he created is 50 thousand times more powerful than laser pointers. Probably, his laser is much more powerful than it can be allowed by american law.

This, however, did not stop Styropyro from testing its own development. In a video of the results of field tests, the YouTuber burned several objects and even left burn marks on diamonds.

The most common type of handheld lasers are laser pointers, which are mainly used in educational institutions. The power of their laser beam is about 0.005 W, which cannot be compared to the 250-watt power of the Styropyro development.

The YouTuber, whose real name is Drake Anthony, works as a chemist and has already become known for his experiments with homemade laser systems. In the United States, the legal limit for laser devices is 5 milliwatts. This is to prevent damage to the eyes. With a power output of 250 W, the Styropyro system far exceeds these limitations and is close to the power used in industrial cutting tools.

To build his own laser system, Styropyro purchased used high-quality parts from eBay and other second-hand shops. In particular, he used industrial laser diodes intended for movie projectors and other damaged electronic components.

Laser installation the YouTuber’s light source contains several powerful blue laser diodes that combine into a single, super-powerful beam. During the test, Styropyro used protective equipment, including special goggles. He also worked in a controlled environment to reduce the likelihood of any accidents.

«This laser is so far off the danger rating scale that its danger to the eyes is incomprehensible», — the YouTuber admits.

In addition to burning things Styropyro demonstrated the process of creating artificial rubies using its laser installation. It focused a laser beam on the material until it crystallized into gem-like structures.

This one type of weapon system they could be used to battle the proliferation of drones in modern warfare, combine this laser with some type of targeting system and increased range of the laser a quick burst could probably take down most drones

That is a danger.

You could burn a hole into/through someone as well. As well as ignite their clothes on fire. Or start a house on fire from a distance. Or blow up a car from a distance.

The local library has a 60 watt CO2 laser for cutting wood, et. al.

A friend who has a sign shop as the 100 watt CO2 laser.

This article is useless.

Why are they comparing a laser to a laser pointer?

Laser pointers by their very nature don’t need a lot of power.

This guy is in the ‘laser cutting’ range. Although ‘hand held’ is not a great option for precision cutting.

Some cutting options are:
xToolP2 $800 (55 W CO2)
Glowforge Aura $1200 (6 W Blue Diode)
xTool F1 $1400 (10 W blue diode and infrared)
Two Trees TTS-55 $219 (
xTool S1 $1850
WeCreat Vision Pro $2,400 (45 watts)

“Although ‘hand held’ is not a great option for precision cutting.”

It all depends on what needs to be lopped off.

At this point, wouldn’t it be considered a weapon and be protected by the second amendment?

It will be interesting to see how small, powerful and economically these weapons can be produced so they could be deployed on individual vehicles or man portable, because defeating a drone swarm of dozens or hundreds of drones is a real challenge

It would also be nice to see the Department of Education (or what will be left of it) harness him and people like him to inspire America's youth into STEM educational pursuits. Smart kids would eat this stuff up.

I wonder what the kill range is?
A sniper a mile away could kill and the shot would be a straight line so no worries about a bullet being off course due to gravity and wind. Best to have to have a laser that does not use visible light.
