MORGANTOWN, West Virginia — According to multiple reports, legendary gymnast Mary Lou Retton has been arrested. Retton, 57, was arrested for driving under the influence in Marion County earlier this month.
According to a report from WDTV, Retton “was charged with one misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances or drugs on Saturday, May 17th, according to magistrate court records. A judge gave Retton a $1,500 personal recognizance bond, court records state.”
Retton was also recently in the news after suffering from a very rare form of pneumonia and was “fighting for her life” in 2023. She was not able to breathe on her own at the time and was in the ICU for over a week.
In 2023, Retton’s daughter, McKenna Kelley, posted the following message on Instagram: “My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life. Out of respect for her and her privacy, I will not discolose all details. However, I will disclose that she is not insured. We ask that if could help in any way, that you 1.) PRAY! and 2.) if you could help us with finances for the hospital bill. ANTYHING, absolutely ANYTHING, would be so helpful for my family and my mom. Thank y’all so very much!”
Retton did not have insurance at the time and the crowdfunding page raised over $200,000 per day to pay for her medical expenses.

I don’t think she’s a teenager any longer. I have no idea what she weighs now. I hope she’s stayed in reasonable shape ... in which case, she’s doin’ it better than me.

Her life has been in a tailspin recently...she was sick not long ago, evidently didn’t have health insurance and was begging for $$$$ with a GoFundMe account...
She was America’s first big time gymnastics darling. Think the Peggy Fleming of gymnastics. How its come to this is mind boggling...
A few months ago I finished writing a memoir. Growing up in the Eighties gets a chapter all its own. Especially 1984. That year was lightning in a bottle.
Speculation is because of multiple hip surgeries she could not get insurance, or its cost was exhorbitant.

Healtny Celeb listed her as 92.5 lbs at age 57.

After her olympic performances, she was on Wheaties boxes, and every other commercial on TV. What did she do with the money?
Hard to feel sorry for these so-called “stars”, when they can’t save a dime. She should be living comfortably, and have insurance, as well.
