OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is partnering with Jony Ive, the legendary designer behind the iPhone, to create wearable AI devices that can be “fully aware” of a user’s surroundings and life.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Altman has directed his team to produce 100 million of these secretive “AI companion” gadgets.
The unnamed device, still in development, will be compact—small enough for a pocket or desk—and designed to reduce screen time. Unlike an Apple Watch, it won’t have phone features.
The collaboration between Altman and Ive sounds like a Silicon Valley dream, but skepticism remains. After the Humane AI pin flopped—users returned the $700 wearable due to its bulk and poor performance—many wonder if people will embrace another always-watching AI device.
It’s unclear if the device will record audio or video, or where such data would be stored. OpenAI hasn’t clarified these details. Still, the concept feels eerily similar to Black Mirror’s “The Entire History of You,” where implants record every moment of a person’s life.

Mandate these things for all government employees. Do a test run like that for 5 years. Then see if private citizens would also like to be subjected to this dystopia.

It will stream live in real time through the Internet of Things to cloud storage. Part of the “Stargate” AI surveillance. Of course they will have Bluetooth capability for Geofencing applications.
These will become mandatory before too long... They will become our mandatory personal Identification devices to be carried at all times to participate in society. Travel, Shop, Etc.
I don’t want it.
Just make 99,999,999.
Betting China will order 1 and a half billion and make the folks wear one. They’ll be connected to their face monitoring system and their social credit score system.
Count on it.
“Count on it.”
Yep... How else can it record your life? I can’t believe that was even a question or curiosity.
“They will become our mandatory personal Identification devices to be carried at all times to participate in society. Travel, Shop, Etc.”
If that is -mandated-, that is 100% Causus Belli and honest to god armed resistance is called for.
I have lived a very interesting life. I have spoken at international conferences in the U.S. and Europe. I have toured Europe extensively with my wife by Eurail and driving. I have played tournament chess in high school and, as a parent, coached a high school team that went to Arizona State finals. I was a key engineer for one of the computer mainframes which competed head to head with IBM mainframes. I had the head IT manager of the second largest bank in Milan Italy tell me that our mainframe was better behaved than their IBM mainframe. I acquired 14 patents on computer HW and software. I could go on and on and bore you further.
However, most of the time I spend is quite forgettable! This AI gizmo sounds like a way to collect loads of boring information. The interesting stuff just doesn’t happen that often. Do I really want to keep track of where I ate lunch last Thursday?
AI won’t go completely away, but I expect this bubble will burst very soon.
A cell phone is required in the world of commercial trucking. When I quit driving part-time I may just pitch the thing. My wife has one, that will be enough.
George Orwell was wrong.
“Big Brother” doesn’t need to force the “telescreen” on everybody.
He’ll just SELL it to them.
Thank you for sharing that. Life experiences like yours are NEVER boring. First hand experiences are priceless!
“Do I really want to keep track of where I ate lunch last Thursday?”
But see it is not for YOU to record your own life, it is so THEY can record your life.
It will record every person that is interacted with as well. Nothing will be private anymore.
“If you could read my mind love,
What a tale my thoughts could tell.
Just like an old time movie
About a ghost from a wishing well.
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet.
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I’m a ghost that you can’t see.”
I presume that’s what it would generate for Gordon Lightfoot
I don’t want big government or big business spying on me but I guess that’s no longer an option
What could possibly go wrong? EVERYTHING!!!!!
